Thank you Barnes and Noble for bringing STEM into our neighborhood. It’s a blast to the past for GH and LM’s uncle. LM learnt to use two joysticks to control a BattleBots sized robot that threw basketball. Then it’s a photosensor (photo = light) bot time to shine. That small vehicle could search the black line, and once it find it it would trace the line according to time limit. Bravo!
There’s lego everywhere! And of course, the 3D printer was there. Can you imagine waiting 14 hours to make about 6 inch printed item? It’s just like baking turkey in the oven pre-thanksgiving, which is coming up btw.
There are ideas get thrown around just by looking at these straw engineering kit. Plastic wheel? Or a small replica of Theo Jansen’s wind art installation  anyone?
They also have virtual reality device that showed the underwater oceanic life and BallBot that could detect anything in front of it and stop. It received command from phone app that could also told it to hop around. But one thing that LM took time to explore is the small circuit bot that wagged side ways according to coding command in the computer.Â
First step is to make a 2D picture or cut one from the provided. Second is to glue it to a popsicle stick. Then clip it to the other popsicle stick that pre-connected to the circuit. Type some command then test it. The first have too much of a bigger angle and too fast so we tweaked it a bit and voila.
Now let’s play spot the difference. Found it? I’ll post the video next. They were brought in by an afterschool and camp/inschool program ThoughtSTEM. Pretty cool!! Make sure check all of this in local B&N, you have until tomorrow to geek out and don’t forget to share your experience. What is your favourite part of the maker faire?
