Dina fixes up some dinner, hoping to salvage this visit.

And get to know Buck's new friend.

Buck, for his part, is thankful that having a friend over for dinner (not to mention with the mess in the kitchen) wasn't seen as grounds for an argument, the way it would've been with his father. Too many times, Buzz had said disparaging things about Ripp's friends. Buck had always hated hearing it, but as a child just swallowed his words and his fear. And never, ever invited anyone over.

Afterwards, Dina plays some chess with Claire. They're having a nice chat, but Claire's cough gets in the way a bit.

Quietly, Buck goes to mix up some of Grandma Missy's soup.

And offers it to Claire, assuring her it would help with her cough.

Claire: This is delicious! Where did you learn to cook like this at your age?

Buck: I learned the recipe from the journal my Grandma left me.

Claire: Dina, your son is such a sweet young man. You're really raising him well.

Dina isn't sure what to say to that. She glances over to Buck who is suddenly silent.

Dina: Well, actually...

Buck invites his new friend, Blue Grey, home after school.

...the house is kind of a mess.

Buck ignores the mess to focus on his homework and getting a part-time job to keep himself busy after school.

Blue keeps herself occupied by the unlocked liquor cabinet.

Blue: I can't believe your mom lets you live like this.

Buck: She's not my mom.

Dina also brings a friend home: Claire Dashwood, new-ish hire for her law firm.

And Dina's pretty embarrassed about the state of her house. Not exactly the best situation for entertaining guests.

And Buck, bored of homework...

...starts loudly (and messily) fooling around with his friend instead of helping out.

It's not like him. But Dina takes care of the mess by herself.
