Pushing Back the Darkness

Is social media a lens or a mirror? Does it give us a twisted sense of what Canadians believe, or does it reflect back to us unsettling truths about who we really are?

We wrestled with many soul-searching questions at the Action Summit to Combat Online Hate. Yet, I left feeling more optimistic about the ability of light to push back darkness.

I commend Katharina von Schnurbein, EU Co-ordinator on Combatting Antisemitism, for her willingness to give direct answers to my sometimes pitiless questions.

I also thank Karen Eltis, Mohammed Hashim, Louis Audet Gosselin, and Matthew Johnson for their thoughtful contributions to our subsequent panel.

We are all grateful to the CIJA staff and volunteers, whose monumental work behind the scenes made the entire event look effortless.
