Theyâre in one of the rarely used stairwells, sitting on carpeted steps that desperately need vacuuming, hiding from responsibilities in their secret hidey hole. Alecâs rolling his cane between his palms, tapping it against a lower step from time to time, and Jaceâs sitting next to him, arms crossed and resting on bent knees. Heâs watching his parabatai with a strange look in his eyes, with softness that most people would say he was incapable of.
Bumping their shoulders together, Jace whispers, âYou really like this guy, donât you?â
The cane goes tap-tap-tap. Alecâs nervousness is showing as he blushes a little. âYeah, I kind of do. A lot, Jace. I like Magnus a lot.â
Jace stares at him silently. Heâs happy for Alec - ever since he realized that his parabatai was gay, Jace feared that Alec would never find true happiness in their rigid society - and yet, he canât help but feel like heâs losing something. But maybe itâs not really a loss but simply a change. Besides, he would never begrudge Alec love. Â
âWell then!â Jace says more loudly, his voice exceedingly and forcefully cheerful, and straightens up, slapping his knees. âThat means we need to take some very drastic measures, my dear parabatai!â
The cane stills and Alec turns to him suspiciously; Jace can see his own too bright a face reflected in Alecâs sunglasses. âWhat drastic measures?â Alec asks.
âRemember when we realized that not even our bond could give you back your sight permanently? We agreed to use our ability to share my sight only as a last resort, only when there would be no other choice, since for you to see, I have to be blind. Remember that?â
âYeah,â Alec says slowly, face still suspicious.
âBut!â Jace continues, one finger raised even though Alec canât see him. âWe also agreed that there would be one exception to this rule, that when you met someone you became smitten with--â
âIâm not smitten!â Alec protests.
âInfatuated, then?â Jace corrects himself cheekily.
Alec hits him with his cane.
âAlright, alright!â Jace laughs. âStop hitting me! We agreed that once you met  The One,â he says and waits for another thump with the cane - but this time, it doesnât come, so his voice softens a little as he continues, âthat when you found him, I would share my sight with you so that you could take a look at him.â
Alecâs breath catches in his throat and he has to fumble for his cane because it falls out of his hands. âI⌠you donât⌠itâs not necessary, Jace,â Alec stutters.
âI think it is,â Jace says, his voice still soft. Then he clears his throat to cover up his emotions and adds, âI mean, what if heâs ugly? What if Magnus looks like a toad?â
Alec frowns at him. âHe doesnât.â
âHe might.â
âHe doesnât.â
âBut he might!â
âThen I wonât care because Iâm not shallow. I did become your parabatai, after all,â Alec replies archly.
âOuch, harsh!â Jace protests, dramatically grabbing his heart.
For a moment, they both just sit there, the offer hanging in the air between them. Alecâs cane goes tap-tap-tap again while Jaceâs waiting him out. He knows that Alecâs made his peace with his blindness a long time ago - but he also knows just how much Alec wants it, to see Magnus at least once! And Jace can give him this. Itâll never be enough, but itâs something.
âYou really donât have to do this, Jace,â Alec murmurs.
Jace bumps their shoulders together. âI know. But I want to.â
Alec smiles in Jaceâs direction and reaches out to squeeze his arm in a silent thanks. âAlright, then. Letâs do it.â
Jace feels his heart swell. And so, to lighten up the mood as heâs wont to do, he leans in and whispers, âJust in case Magnus does look like a toad?â
For a blind guy, Alecâs aim with his cane is impeccable.

Can you pleeeeaaaase continue your blind alec au???? Pppplllllllleeeeeeaaaaaaaaassssssseeeeeeee
I would love to, believe me. Gosh, I love Blind!Alec. But it seems all my muses are giving me these days are MacGyver bunnies. I guess the long hiatus really got me.
I totally blame @allofthefanfic for this, who prompted âFireworksâ and I thought âHey, I have this really short ideaâ and then this went completely out of control. Itâs not even the right time of the year, so Iâm very sorry for that, hopefully youâll still like it.
(also, @jumpseatmonalisa, now thereâs more ... in case youâre interested)
blind!Alec with Magnus being over for the New Yearâs celebration.Â

They sing in a chaotic symphony of high notes and fill the air with the smell of gun powder. Itâs cold air brimming with excitement, the clinking of glasses and the only night when Alec can hear the time pass.Â
It starts around 9 pm when the first, distant rockets go off. A long time passes between them and their siren calls sound through the windows of the kitchen like heavy sighs.Â
10 pm is when the first firecrackers dance across the street. Their sound vanishes a lot quicker and there are more, they hurry after each other, not wanting to be left alone. In the kitchen Alec can hear the âpopâ of a bottle being opened. His guess is red wine, but he doesnât know for sure. Itâs not important.Â
11 pm is when Isabelle gets irritated with the neighbors starting early. The door of the kitchen creeks when she opens it, yelling âGET A DAMN CLOCK! YOUâRE TOO EARLY!â into the night. Cold air brushes Alecâs ankles. He turns his ear towards the door, curious if his sister would march up the metal steps to the terrace to pass judgement on those that start the new year an hour too early. The first trace of burned gun powder reaches Alecâs nose.
His motherâs steps are right behind his sisterâs voice. A hand softly passes through Alecâs hair when the steps reach him. He knows that. She always does that and he likes it. Itâs a way of looking at him, that he can see.
11:30 pm is when Max starts counting the minutes loudly and demands his fatherâs watch because it has numbers that glow in the dark. Isabelle is back from the terrace, this time their motherâs voice is right behind Izzyâs steps.Â
âLanguage, Isabelle, please. We still have to live next to these people the next year.â
11:15 pm was something new though. Maxâ voice rang through the kitchen. The dishwasher closed and his father sighed. â15 MINUTES! LETâS BLOW THE BACKYARD UP!â
âMAX!â Robertâs voice was funny when he was shocked because it was usually so dark and a simple river of ultramarine, but when something startled him there was yellow splattered all over the blue and it always made Alec laugh. Hurried footsteps to the front door. The cold air began creeping into the room, but Alec was still warm and glowing from dinner.Â
âYou want to get a jacket and go up to the terrace?â The voice was soft and green right next to his ear. It belonged to the hand gently squeezing his upper arm. Alec could taste his heartbeat right on his tongue, so he only nodded because his words drowned in the silence of the now almost empty kitchen.Â
Magnus got up from the place right next to him. Three steps to get around the table, two more to walk into the next room, three smaller ones. Looking for his jacket? A soft âAh, there.â Rustling of fabric. Four steps back. Magnusâ shoes sounded different on the tiled floor of the kitchen then the ones of his family.Â
Alec always wore the same jacket on this night. It was one of his fathersâ work jackets, it was warm and too big and Isabelle had told him it was neon colored; orange with yellow stripes. âSo, we will never loose you in the smoke we create on the terrace.âÂ
âLooking good, my friend,â Magnus announced when he helped Alec into the jacket and eventually zipped it up in the front. Alec liked the sound of the zipper because it went so easily. It was one steady sound, a system working without flaws.Â
âYou know that I can put on a jacket by myself, right?âÂ
Alec couldnât help but chuckle when Magnus pulled a scarf around his neck neck and tucked it carefully into the collar of the jacket. His fingers only ghosted over the skin of Alecâs cheeks for mere seconds, but it was enough to have a new wave of heat and red bubbling up in his chest.Â
âSure I know, but I promised to take care of you tonight and thatâs what I will do.â Magnus put extra emphasis on each word in that kind of sing song-way and Alec always felt like he was wrapping a bow around the words. It made him grin, because he couldnât help but imagine Magnus with a big golden bow around his head. âAnd if it makes you smile like that, I will take care of you for the rest of my life.â
His voice was closer now, warm and intimate. The gold molted, brimming with heat that washed over Alecâs face sinking into his skin. There was the picture of a chandelier at the back of his mind and Alec didnât know why. He carefully raised one hand in front of his chest, spreading the fingers out towards Magnus and he took it, like he had done so many times already. And still not often enough.Â
Together they took the metal stairs up to the terrace.Â
Isabelle wasnât cursing anymore and the night was alive with the high whistling of early fireworks. Garfield was probably watching the spectacle through the window in Alecâs room or still sleeping on his bed. It was the only night he always had off.
Maryse handed them champagne glasses with orange juice. They never drank alcohol on Silvester, but they filled high quality orange juice into fancy glasses because it was an important night. Alec could feel the thin glass against his fingertips, the texture of the stem that always had some kind of different pattern, running the fingertips of his other hand along the sharp edge on the top. Never sharp enough to cut.Â
With Magnus by his side they moved away from where Isabelle and Max had put up the bottles with the rockets all ready to be fired.
âTwo rows with green bottles,â Magnus described while cautiously pulling Alecâs back to his chest. âSome are still empty. They point towards the neighborâs house, but it looks like they will fly in a high enough curve to pass over the roof. Three rockets are in the big flower pots on the right side of the terrace and your brother seems to be having a discussion with your father about who will have the lighter.â
Alec felt a broad grin on his face. âThatâs the same every year.â Some things didnât change. Some things would stay the same, even in the new year. And there was nothing bad about it.Â
Alec leaned back against Magnus, paying close attention to not the delicate glass in his hand, but knowing his mother she wouldnât have put too much orange juice into them.Â
In the new year Alec would still be blind, but no matter how many people made confused sounds when he told them about it, his world would never be black. He wouldnât be lonely because his heartbeat would keep whispering in his ear, because the voices of his family would keep touching his skin, because life was more than seeing and because âseeingâ was more than opening your eyes.
The seconds before midnight were Magnusâ voice in his ear, his warmth against Alecâs back, his breath on Alecâs cheek as he counted, his lips swallowing one second after the other. âTen, nine, eight, seven ...â
Usually there would be his motherâs voice next to him, and maybe it would be the first new thing of the new year.
12 pm was the excited âHAPPY NEW YEAR!â of his sister, the âBURN!â of his brother, the disbelieving laughter of his father when the first rocket sang her high-pitched song without it finding a sudden end by hitting the neighbors rooftop.
12 pm was the kiss on the forehead by his mother and the soft âHappy new year, sweetheart. Stay awesome.â
12:05 pm was the crushing hug of his sister. The taste of orange juice on his tongue, the hurried steps of his brother, his excited voice carrying across the terrace âThis oneâs for you, Alec!â and then the myriad of little explosion, going off fast after another, directly followed by high pitched notes, another round of explosions. Magnus' voice was back at his ear describing what colors illuminated the night and how they reflected on Maxâ glasses, how the tense line of Robertâs shoulders slowly relaxed after no spark had flown to far.
âTHANK YOU!â, Alec yelled back at Max.Â
âHe made a salute,â Magnus chuckled so very close to him. Â
12:10 pm was the gentle press of lips against the skin below Alecâs ear. It was a hug that was so very different from everything else. It was the closest Magnus had ever gotten to nervousness.Â
âHappy new year, Alexander.â
The next rocket went off, but Alecâs mind was ringing with those four words, not the words really, with the sound of them, the voice that painted them featherlight all over his heart. A giddy smile burned on his lips in all the right ways.Â
I had gotten the prompt Orange on FF.net and got this sudden idea for it. I also am currently sick one again and felt like crying a bit.Â
Blind!Alec and waiter!Magnus and the color orange.

"Iâll paint the whole world for you, in whatever color you want. Iâll describe it to you when you canât see, so my voice will be your eyes.â

His motherâs reading glasses had been orange.Â
Isabelleâs favorite was orange. She had it worn for her first day of kindergarten.Â
The lamp over his baby brotherâs was painted orange. It played a simple melody, too, and it helped Max fall asleep.Â
His father had a little orange cat sitting on his desk. Alec had made it in fifth grade, when theyâd been allowed to experiment with clay. Alec still thought it looked ridiculous, the orange stripes looked messy and the eyes were mismatched, but his father kept it nonetheless. Every time Alec came to visit him, his fingers found the smooth surface of the cat. His father left it at the same spot through the years.
Isabelle had a new favorite dress, when she grew out of the one from her kindergarten days. She told him proudly that it was still orange. She took his hands and let his fingertips find the texture of the white roses that where stitched into the orange fabric and scattered across the dress.Â
When his mother found an orange shirt in the store, she got it for Alec because she knew he liked the color.Â
Max made sure that they got the right orange juice when they went shopping. "You can taste the color,â he announced when he pressed a glass into Alecâs hands.Â
Alec loved oranges, the bitter sweet taste, the feeling of the smooth outside of the peel against his fingertips.Â
His mother still had the same reading glasses.Â
One evening Robert came home, telling Alec that heâd gotten an orange collar for Garfield, Alecâs guide dog.Â
It was Alecâs favorite color and the one thing that was still clear as day no matter how long it had been that his world had become dark. He remembered the other colors, too, but orange was a feeling that didnât fade. He painted the darkness that was his reality now, orange, imagined the walls of his room with stripes or stars, whatever he felt like when he woke up.Â

"The orange juice is for you?â
Alec had heard the steps before the voice had been there, it was pleasantly warm. He wore a T-shirt that was soft against his skin, well-worn, a bit too big, perfect for Alec. "Yes, thank you.â
The clunking sound of the glass against the table. There was no coaster, but in this little cafe, they didnât have them. The walk from the door to the counter took Alec seven steps, four more to get to his usual table. The waiter only needed three to get to Alec. He was taller than Alec. Alec had only heard his voice around the cafe for a week now. Isabelle had confirmed that he was new. And cute. Alec felt his face heating up when the waiterâs footsteps didnât lead him away right after placing Alecâs glass on the table. There were no footsteps. The waiter was still standing next to his table.
"Anything else you would like?â The voice was calm and completely free of stress and tension despite the buzzing sound of the cafĂŠ around them. Alec turned his head a bit, to make it easier to listen to the waiter, easier to soak up his voice, drowning out the background noise. Isabelle always called it 'staring with his earsâ.
"Do you still have some of the orange cake? The one with the cream in the middle?â
Ruffling of fabric. The waiter probably turned to look at the counter. Alec expected to hear footsteps now, that he would leave to check with the kitchen maybe.
"No, Iâm sorry, it looks like we are out.â
Alecâs fingertips tasted the cold surface of the glass. It was the first time that he had found the courage to go to the cafĂŠ on his own and he felt stupid just sitting there drinking juice. But he wasnât in the mood for coffee and he didnât want to leave too soon because he wanted to keep that voice close just a bit longer. Garfield lay next to his chair, his warmth was a constant presence against Alecâs leg.Â
"Oh, well-â
"But we have muffins.â There was a smile and it was warmth against Alecâs skin. It was a certain high note in the words, a tiny drop of excitement that made Alec smile as well. He tried to hide it, biting his lip. It was stupid for a smile to be contagious that he couldnât even see. Yet it was. This was fun. "Fresh from the oven.â The upturn at the end, that was a smirk, a try at seduction. Alecâs heart fluttered in his chest.Â
"Then I would like one of those,â he decided, finally allowing his own smile to break free and paint all across his face with an exciting shiver running over his skin. He moved the glass closer to him, his fingers followed the straight line of the glass upwards, danced on the rim and for a moment they hovered in the air before touching the straw. A surface not as hard as the glass, not as cold.Â
"Iâll get you one.â One step, a second one. The cafe grew louder again. The third step sounded, but it was different, with more force than the others, a sudden movement. The next step was closer again. The waiter came back. He stopped next to the table, again not too close to disturb Garfield. A dull sound off something against the table, a hand. A movement, accompanied by an intake of breath, he leaned down and Alec tilted his head so his right ear was turned towards the waiter, where Alec suspected his head to be.Â
"Oh, and before I chicken out again, Iâd like to tell you something âŚâ Another intake of breath. He wasnât close enough yet for Alec to feel the warmth of his body. Fingertips drummed nervously on the tabletop.Â
"I think youâre beautiful.â
For Alecâs ears the cafĂŠ suddenly became silent. His face was painted with flames, his heart singing with heat. He didnât move because he was afraid to wake up. In his mind the room was drenched in orange color, with sunlight kissing the windows and he didnât care that the weather channel had spoken about a cloudy day. His world was flooded with sunlight.Â
"Thank you.â His words stumbled over every shivering heartbeat vibrating through his whole body. He wanted to say something back. He wanted to let the waiter know that he liked his voice, that it had a tinge of orange to it. But he found that he couldnât, his world was reeling and spilling over with vibrant colors, that for now there was no place for more words. He would come back again and do it then.
"Iâll get you your muffin now.â And the three steps back to the counter and beyond had a new rhythm to them, but maybe that was just because Alecâs heartbeat got mixed in with their sound.Â

When heâd woken up in the hospital after the accident, he had cried and Isabelle had been with him there. She had held his hand, had whispered into his ear 'the walls are orangeâ. He had yelled at her, had been so angry, but she had just hugged him and when her tears had painted his cheek with her own sorrow, he had understood that he wasnât alone with his pain.
"For you, they can be orange, Alec,â she had whispered, words almost drowning in tears. "For you, they can be every color you want.â Her fingers had gripped his shoulders hard. Her hug was almost too tight to breathe, but it was what had prevented Alec from breaking apart back then.
âNo,â heâd whispered putting his arms around the shaking chest of his sister. "Orange is perfect.â
