hi flowers! i have a question about the veilguard cc i was hoping you could answer. i was recently reminded of this reddit thread i saw a while back:
i know there are factors that play into skin tone—complexions have slight changes, maybe height if ghil dirthalen is correct as the last commenter mentions, and i think there might be differences depending on race, it i’m not mistaken? or i could be thinking of scar coloration, which iirc does (but qunari skin tones are different from the rest either way).
i’m curious if rowan and strife’s skin tones are unique to them, or if they are actually achievable in the character creator in some way. thanks!
I covered the differences in skin tints between playable races in today's useless fact, which isn't super relevant here, more like an FYI. And you are actually right about the scar colours as well - they, too, are different for each race (I talked about it here), probably to account for the newly introduced differences in skin tones (which they never should've introduced imo. stupid system. who did that).
TLDR is that Rowan's skin is achievable for any Qunari Rook. Strife's in a bit of a grey area, considering his complexion is not available to Rook, but I believe that other elven Rooks can get close. NPC skin tones in general can work a bit differently, but they are not drastically different.
Below the cut, you can find a detailed explanaion of how skin colour works in Veilguard in general, how Rook's tints compare to NPCs and how you can *actually* give your Rook a skin colour like Rowan's/Strife's.
For the most part, NPC skin settings aren't actually that different from Rook's. They both operate within the colour gradient shown below. Each of the four sections represents one of the playable races - the bottom one is Qunari, the top one is humans, and the middle are elves and dwarves but idk which one comes first.
Meaning, NPC skin colour can't be *that* much darker than Rook's. H o w e v e r, there is a difference in how skin colour is applied - where Rook has more "rigid" options like Warm/Neutral/Cool hue, and a limited number of Skin Tones, NPCs get a bit moree leeway.
Skin tone, for example, is numerically represented in the game by values from 0 to 1. Rook's Skin Tone values can only be a number divisible by 0,0625 (0,125, 0,1875, etc.), but NPC Skin Tone value can be Just About Anything. Though it's hard to say if there is a big difference between 0,125 available to Rook and 0,140 that can be assigned only to an NPC. Same goes for Skin Hues. In the CC, you pick between Warm (0), Neutral (1) and Cool (2), but NPCs can have values like 1.8, and so on. But, again, it's hard to say if it actually creates a big difference between NPCs and what's available to the player.
There are also differences betwen individual textures - some are lighter and some are darker by default, they each have additional texture maps that define how complexions interact with light sources etc.
However, I cannot stress enough that your default preset or height will not impact the skin colour range of your character. I actually would love to see a source on Ghil Dirthalen's claim that height change the skin tone since it just. It has to be some kind of a misunderstanding or a misinterpretation 💀 How would that even work? 💀💀
As For The Thing You Actually Asked About, Rowan uses the Rich 3 complexion with the Cool Skin Hue, the darkest Skin Tone and maxed out Melanin (100%). If you use those settings on your Rook like I did in the screenshot below, the skin is going to look just about the same. Well at least I don't see a big difference personally.
As for Strife, as I said before, his complexion actually isn't available to Rook, so there will be some unavoidable differences. However, he uses the same settings as Rowan (cool hue + darkest skin tone + 100% melanin), and if you use the same settings on your elven Rook, you will get something... Close? Close enough? (the Rook below is using the Rosy 1 complexion)
Hopefully, that answers your question! As well as a bunch of others you didn't ask 🫶

I've complained about Divine Leliana and the fandom about her so I'll do Vivienne instead. In pure vanilla canon, Divine Vivienne is arguably the most effective Divine in trying to not only instill change but also maintain it for the future with her policies vs Leliana firebombing everything in the short term and Cassandra returning to the status quo to repeat the cycle.

I quite like; I need to play more origins and have them out with me more but I do feel sometimes that the whole rivalry angle is a little boring. which I think is more testament to how foundational the yuri is than a comment on its inherent quality.
