âPapa! Papa!â Did you feel that?â
He blinks, feeling shaken awake suddenly.
âPapa are you awake?â He smirks at the blonde lass doing the shaking. He isnât exactly surprised; especially since he sees Alice, practically bouncing on her feet, still in her nightgown, illuminated by the candle by the bed.
âNo.â He responds, closing his eyes but he canât help the grin.
âBut you responded.â She points out, he can practically hear the eye roll from her, and sheâs nearly 10 years old, filled to the brim with attitude.

WIP Week - Day 4: AU WIP
Hey hey, I actually got this posted before midnight today!!
Todayâs excerpt comes from Chapter 1 of Your Way is the Way Home (aka the co-worker slooooooooow burn fic that came from this prompt from @bleebug). The whole fic is probably a ways off from being completed, but I have the whole thing outlined and sections of several chapters written...and I really want to get back to delving into it soon. I love this idea and I can see the whole story arc in my mind, I just need the time to actually write it.
This is the flashback that sets the scene for one of the main plot points in the story, and a little bit of the present time lead in to said flashback. Enjoy a little drunken silliness with Emma, Ruby, and Mary-Margaret!!
She glanced at the paper for a moment â it had arrived the day before yesterday and it had taken all Emmaâs willpower and stubbornness (and a shot of her favorite rum) to give her the courage to open it. The contents had been a huge relief â everything had come back negative, she was clean â but that paper had directly led to the one new yearâs resolution she had made. It was a resolution that sheâd surprised herself a bit with â not to mention that it had thrown some of her friends for a little bit of a loop â but given her current circumstances, it had seemed to make sense. Not that Ruby and Mary-Margaret really saw it that way, she thought. Though, to be fair, itâs not like they know the whole story.
Her memory drifted back to the pre-New Yearâs Eve girlsâ night that sheâd held a couple of days earlier, and snorted to herself as she remembered how her friends had taken her âannouncement.â

âPfft. Youâll cave. I give it a month,â Ruby said, taking a long pull from her beer and flopping back into the corner of the couch. She squinted at Emma, tilting her head in thought. âMaaaybe six weeks if youâre feeling particularlyâŚ.resolute,â she finished with a smile and a self-satisfied chuckle at her own joke.
Emma crossed her arms â a bit defensively, if she were being completely honest â and frowned at her friend. âIâm not you, Rubes, I can do this.â Admittedly, the jab was a bit harsh, and she didnât really mean it. It was just that Emma was nervous about this resolution, and a little embarrassed â or, well, at least sheepish â about the reasons it was necessary in the first place (not that sheâd shared those reasons with her friends yet â and she had exactly zero plans to do so).
âOh, the wound! Itâs mortal! However shall I live with such a stain upon my honor?!â Ruby proclaimed before dissolving into a fit of giggles, slipping further into the couch cushions, her drink hovering at an increasingly precarious angle. Emma was about to say something about that, but Mary-Margaret beat her to it, taking the bottle from Rubyâs hand and settling it gently onto a coaster on the coffee table.
âRuby,â Mary-Margaret began, âIâm sure that Emma can stick to her plan â if this is what she really wants, Iâm sure sheâll be able to do it.â
âThanks, Mary-Margaret,â Emma replied, grateful that at least one of her friends was being supportive.
âFor two months, at least,â the other woman turned to face her, a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. Behind her, Ruby cackled and gave up any attempt at sitting up, instead pulling her feet up and stretching out on the couch.
Emma shook her head, starting to feel a touch of true irritation creep in the longer her friendsâ ribbing went on. âReally?! I kind of expected that reaction from Ruby-â
âHey!!â Ruby cried, raising her head to level a teasing glare in Emmaâs direction. âI resent that.â
âYou donât really have a leg to stand on here, Rubes,â Emma said, âseeing as how you just gave me grief about it.â
âOh yeah, right,â Ruby nodded before flopping back into the couch cushions. âYup. Yeah. I totally did do that,â she executed an elaborate flourish of her hand. âNevermind, then! Continue.â
âAs I was saying, I kind of expected that reaction from her,â Emma said. âBut you, Mary-Margaret? I thought youâd be thrilled I was going to be spending more time focusing on myself.â
âOh Emma, I am,â her friend said earnestly. âI justâŚitâs just unexpected, thatâs all.â
âUnnaturalâs more like it,â Ruby muttered darkly from her nest of pillows. âIf you want to focus on you, why not commit to taking up yoga? Or start a new hobby? Ooh!! Or pick up an old hobby. You could go back to doing more with photography â you were really good at that.â
âUh, thanksâŚitâs a good idea, Rubes. Maybe Iâll do that too,â Emma latched onto Rubyâs comment as a bit of deflection. She really didnât want to get into her reasoning for the resolution sheâd picked â how meeting Walsh at that Halloween party earlier in the year (and going home with him after) had been fun at the time (despite his rather over-the-top monkey costume), but the way heâd unexpectedly re-entered her life about ten days earlier had been anything but.
Shaking her head to clear it, she tried to refocus the conversation away from anything touching on her recent life choices. âWhat about you guys? Any big resolutions this year?â
Mary-Margaret perked up, her eyes sparkling far too much for a woman whoâd downed as much alcohol as she had by that point in the evening. âWell, actually yes. David and I have been talking about it, and weâve been thinking itâs finally time to ââ
âNooooo. Nuh uh. Nope.â Ruby groaned loudly and flopped over on the couch so that she was facing Mary-Margaret. Squinting at the other woman, she pointed a perfectly manicured finger at her for emphasis. âEmma has â for reasons unknown â decided to make a very personal resolution. About her. We should make a pact, do the same â and couples resolutions donât count. So,â she asked, with the supreme solemnness only the truly plastered could achieve, âwhat, Mary-Margaret, are you going to do for yourself in 2017?â
@bleebug I was completely mystified as to how their head hadnât exploded. It just kept coming out and Iâm just like, âDude, did the blackhead eat into the BONE????â because that is the only way I could see fitting that much grossness into one (well three, but it had merged to become a super zit) pore.
