There's an eighteen minute sample of White Trash Warlock on Soundcloud. I'm so excited with Michael David Axtell's narration. It was really important to me to have an audiobook not just because I love them but because of the accessibility they bring.

This book has been around a while. I loved the premise of The Nothing Man by Catherine Ryan Howard and finally got a copy. “At the age of twelve, Eve Black was the only member of her family to survive a brutal attack from the Nothing Man. Now an adult, she is obsessed with finding him. Jim Doyle is now a security guard. As he reads the Nothing Man, Eve’s true-crime memoir, he becomes angry…because he is the Nothing Man. Eve is getting close to finding him and he has no choice but to stop her.” This is a book-within-a-book. Doyle is reading Eve’s book so that’s what we see. CRH writes a fast-paced narrative. The book was inspired from the story of the Golden State Killer. CRH does a good job taking you inside Doyle’s head - and the evil inside. A great twisty ending and I like that Howard gives us an epilogue especially for Doyle’s family. 56 Days is the new book from Catherine Ryan Howard that takes place in Dublin at the beginning of the pandemic. I listened to the audiobook version narrated by Alana Kerr Collins. "56 days ago Ciara and Oliver meet in a supermarket queue. A few weeks later when the lockdown threatens to keep them apart Oliver suggests that Ciara move in with him. But Oliver has a secret...and so does Ciara... Today detectives arrive at Oliver's apartment to discover a decomposing body inside. Was it an accident? Or did the pandemic cover the perfect crime?" Howard does a nice job building the story. You think you know where it's going because there's a dead body at the beginning. But there's more layers to the story. Why is there a body? Who is it? Who is responsible? What happened? Howard gives us a little bit at a time.The ending twist was a surprise. The time line jumps around quite a bit as the reasons are revealed. With the audiobook at times it was difficult to keep up with the timelines (mostly because I would miss it) But the context quickly puts you in the right place. Howard discusses using the pandemic as a plot device in the author notes and how many authors have said they refuse to include it in stories. Her writing reminds us of the early fear and uncertainty...and how hard it was to find toilet paper. The story works better because of it. How much can someone change? How much can one person forgive? Howard's characters are pretty clear. Great audiobook performance from Collins. False Witness is the new stand-alone book from Karin Slaughter. I listened to the audiobook version. "Two sisters, Leigh and Callie, committed a crime years ago to save each other from a predator. They thought they were free and clear. But someone from the past is acting like they know what happened. Now Leigh must ask her sister for help to save herself and her family." Slaughter gives us another wild story. The tension is high throughout the novel. You are always wondering if the next page will be the one where the sisters' secret is made public. There are characters you want to protect - Leigh and Callie - both abused by the father of a kid they babysit - both affected for life from the abuse. Buddy is a character you want to see punished. No sympathy for him even after what happens. Slaughter gives us a horrible character hiding in plain sight. A son who wants revenge. One sister who can't beat her addictions. Another sister full of guilt. And a crazy, psychotic girlfriend/fiance/wife. Slaughter chose to use the current pandemic situation as the setting in this book. She gives an explanation for the WHY in the acknowledgements. I thought that it did not help the story other than to place it at a specific time. She also gives a lot of drug addiction statistics that tend toward overexplaining. Again - doesn't add to the narrative. She also addresses this in the acknowledgements. Slaughter gives us a wild ending. And there's an interesting twist that was unexpected. I hope we get to see Harper and/or Maddie in a future book. Great audiobook performance from Kathleen Early. Slaughter fans should like this new book from KS.
