Black-painted Seaside Home By Dow Jones Mimics Local Fishermen's Sheds

Larch cladding has been painted black to create a uniform look for this seaside residence on the Isle of Wight, England, by Dow Jones Architects (+ slideshow).

The Sett by London-based Dow Jones Architects is situated in the village of Totland and will take inspiration from black-painted fishermen’s sheds on a nearby seashore, which characteristic a thick, somewhat reflective coating that would generally be utilised to shield boats.

“The cladding is Siberian larch, which is naturally yellow-green, and the windows are sapele wood, which is a dark red-chocolate colour, so we desired the exterior to have a uniformity so you go through the formal attributes of the composition, and not the components,” architect Alun Jones informed Dezeen.

The two-storey property was developed for a household of 4 on a former orchard, and is made to frame views of surrounding fruit trees, like an inner courtyard set about an apple tree.

“When we first visited the web site we had to climb into it via the perimeter of trees and undergrowth,” explained Jones. “After inside, it felt like a secret backyard or a discovered space, so it was essential to structure views inside of this internalised planet to emphasise the characteristics of this area.”

Rooms on the ground floor have been organized to create a selection of relationships with the web site. “The playroom is the pause in the plan,” said Jones. “The children’s bedrooms are not that large, so we manufactured this large landing as a shared location for them, in which they can play, do homework, and observe the sun dip into the sea.”

The residence was constructed with a prefabricated timber frame, and attributes concrete flooring during the interior and exterior spaces, laid in panels so it could be hand trowelled by a plasterer.

The chimney breast is developed with low-cost bricks and has been smeared with concrete slurry with a clear seal to give the wall a far more uniform look, related to the concrete floor.

Joinery all through the residence, like huge pivoting doors that near off the review and the kitchen, is manufactured from Douglas fir, which will turn into redder and darker above time.
