I feel fortunate to have learned about Tommy J Curry today. I plan on ordering his book, “The Man-Not: Race, Class, Genre, and the Dilemmas of Black Manhood”. I’ve been watching a YouTube video with Tommy J Curry and John Youngblood called, “Black Masculinities: the super predator – not”, by Larger, Freer, More Loving. Once upon a time I had a conversation that led into an argument with someone I had considered a best friend. In her anger she compared me to Rick Santorum. She stripped me of my blackness and femininity because she was upset and felt entitled to. In my own frustration I never once considered removing her of her identity as an Indian woman. As I extend my series, "Black Men Guided" I want to get personal. Rather than referencing images of black men that I find online, I want to reference images of black men I know and or are friends/significant others/spouses of friends that I know and can converse with. I do want to facilitate discussions with heterosexual black men. As a black heterosexual women of Igbo descent, I want for my self-integrity to remain independent of the standards and expectations that others place on me.
