Lisa K. Farrell, founder and CEO of Lisa Home Mortgage, a Black-owned federal and multi-state licensed mortgage company, is working with first-time homebuyers in Philadelphia, Penn. to help them qualify for and receive up to $10,000 in funding to be used toward a down payment and closing costs. The Philly First Home Grant does not require monthly payments and is forgivable pending terms and conditions. *The flexibility of the program allows qualified homebuyers, even with credit scores as low as 580, to gain access to the program. The program does, however, have income restrictions. Homebuyers must meet all terms and conditions of the program, and complete a free homebuyer’s seminar with a mandatory counseling program. Clients can be pre-approved for a mortgage loan, but the mandatory seminar and counseling program must be completed before a sign an agreement of sale is executed. The agreement of sale must be signed by the homebuyer and seller after completing housing counseling. On Wednesday, archaeologists confirmed the discovery of at least 328 graves from a Black cemetery underneath a business property in Clearwater, Florida, extending to an adjacent road. WTSP reports the graves are from the St. Matthews Baptist Church Cemetery, established in 1902 and was in operation through the 1940s. The church was pushed to sell the property in the mid-1950s for $15,000. According to researchers, 328 graves were found at the Black cemetery discovered last May. Viola Roberts Lampkin Brown from Berryville, Virginia is now 110-years old, making her one of the very few people alive around the world who is a supercentenarian. Brown was born on October 4, 1911, in Hume, Virginia where she lived for 7 years with her parents, James and Maria Roberts, and her 12 siblings. They eventually moved to Clarke County where Brown worked cleaning, cooking, and caregiving for a family. In 1936, Brown got married to John Lampkin and lived in a home her husband built using a part of an old livery stable in Berryville. They had two children before Lampkin passed away in 1982. Six years later, Brown married her second husband Rev. Paul Brown, who died in 1998. Since then, she lived in the house that Lampkin built. Her daughter, 79-year old Vonceil Hill, stayed with her since last year when she became too frail to walk on her own. This year, she turned 110-years old and joined the rare list of supercentenarians, wherein only 18 people around the world are confirmed alive, according to the Gerontology Research Group. A Black California couple is suing a real estate appraiser and the company she works for after she lowballed the value of the couple’s home by $500,000. Paul Austin and Tenisha Tate-Austin, who purchased their Marin City, CA, home in 2016 off-market from another Black family, did more than $400,000 in renovations on the home, adding another floor and adding another 1,000 square feet of space, building a deck, and installing new floors and a fireplace before having the property appraised again. The appraiser, Janette Miller of Miller & Perotti Real Estate Appraisals, viewed the home and, according to the Washington Post, noted the fireplace, new deck, and the room they added. The Austins were excited about the valuation—until Miller appraised the property at $995,000, significantly lower than previous appraisals. In their lawsuit, filed last Thursday, the Austins say they decided to get another appraisal several weeks later. Believing Miller lowballed the value of the home due to their race, this time they enlisted a White friend, Jan, to pretend to be the owner and “Whitewashed” their home removing their family pictures and their African- themed art. Additionally Jan decorated the home with pictures of her family. This time, the appraisal came in at $1.48 million. The couple is now seeking financial damages from Miller and the company and asking the court to ensure they don’t discriminate against Black homeowners in California again. Labeling itself as the nation’s first Black women-owned cannabis speakeasy, Josephine & Billie’s just opened in America’s second-largest city. Whitney Beatty, CEO and founder, and business partner/COO Ebony Andersen developed the new Los Angeles-based dispensary to create a welcoming and educational retail experience for women of color, including Black women. The business reports its unique speakeasy-style cannabis retail concept was inspired by ‘tea pads’ in Black communities in the ’20s and ’30s. Reportedly named after famed American-born French entertainer and actress Josephine Baker and legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday, the business received its first investment from The Parent Co., a cannabis venture backed by rapper Jay-Z. “Most stores are designed and built by white people, with one perspective. And women of color rarely get the opportunity to feel comfortable in those spaces. But Josephine & Billie’s was designed and built by, and for, women of color with that in mind,” Andersen said.
