@blackfenrir asked: [loss] receiver is incorrectly told the sender is dead
Until she saw his body, she wasn’t going to believe it.
Yet, within these four walls, with nothing to do, her mind couldn’t help but spiral. Yuffie remembered in her early days of being a Shinobi, a story she’d been told about how they used to hold people in windowless rooms with no light as a form of torture, put someone in the quiet with nothing to do for long enough and eventually even the most sane people could be driven to madness.
She kinda got it right now.
If she were able, Yuffie would have torn the world down to find him, she wasn’t being hyperbolic, if there was anyone in this world who meant something to her, it was Cloud. This pain in the center of her chest ached and sank in so deep it felt like this ball of lead she would never shed. Worry and guilt coiled together. She shouldn’t have been stupid enough to think her father wouldn’t pull something like this. She should have preempted this, and yet, she had truly believed they had managed to find some kind of neutrality. That she would stay out of his way and he would stay out of hers. How fucking stupid. If something had happened to him, Yuffie knew it would be her fault…and she wasn’t sure she could handle that.
While she couldn’t work out what the hell they had done here, she had managed to work out the hard way that reflect had been cast on the door. A rebounding spell had knocked her out for a solid minute. She wasn’t going to be able to brute force her way out of this, while she bided her time, waiting for something, a crack in the metaphorical armour to appear…all she could do was worry.
If Cloud was fine, was he worried about her? Had he even realised that she was gone or would he just think she was ghosting him? That she had decided that he simply wasn't even worth leaving? The thought made her sick…and so did the thought that something had happened to him and she wasn’t there to protect him. Did Cloud need her protection? No. He could handle himself, she’d seen him fight way worse and way more dangerous things and emerge without a scratch. A shake of her head to herself. A reminder that this couldn’t be happening.
It took days. Of worrying. Of spiralling through her own thoughts. It occurred to her if he was okay, he would know something was wrong…and he would have been here already. He would have shown up. Each second that ticked past was some kind of confirmation of it. It didn’t help her find any clarity. Then opportunity presented itself, not with violence, but friendship. Honestly, Yuri was the last person that Yuffie had ever expected to see, but she’d known the kid as long as they had been alive…she was glad it counted for something. She would even forgive his debt.
Out the window, crystalline cross pressed into her hand. She could see the worried expression on her childhood friend's face, mostly, because he knew exactly what Yuffie was going to do.
“I’m going to find him.” Of course she was. There was absolutely no doubt in her mind. “If anything has happened to him, you better summon Leviathan to hold me back.”
