  black|Up Ladies Rock!

The theme songs for the most recent black|Up event, put on by Duty Free Caribbean at La Place Carenage, could have easily been “Girls just wanna have fun,” and “I’m every woman.” After all, the sessions were all about ladies having fun while enjoying their new persona a well-made up face can project.

black|Up Cosmetics is exclusive to Duty Free Caribbean here in Saint Lucia. Described as the first French upscale beauty brand dedicated to women of color, the Paris based line is known for its range of professional, quality makeup and accessories, answering to the specific needs of darker skin tones.

Last weekend make-up sessions, held Friday November 23 and Saturday November 24, featured black|Up International Makeup Artist Melissa Marie-Rose and Duty Free Caribbean’s very own Vernessa Henry-Long and her team.

One-on-one, 30 minute makeover sessions were conducted on both days in addition to a black|Up Master Class on the Saturday. The ladies were engaged in different techniques, while learning about the product line and the various tools for applying make-up.

According to Vernessa Henry-Long, the sessions are designed to empower women and to remove whatever taboos and fears some may have about make-up. “We make it interesting and fun while offering a sort of education to the ladies about their skin tones, how to take care of their faces before and after applying the make and of course what works and what doesn’t,” Henry-Long says. Make up she says, is just one way in which women can express individuality and positive emotions.

The Master Class session which culminated the event, offered the ladies free goodies from black|Up as well as wines and eats to add to all the gaiety of the day. They were also presented with certificates of participation.
