Protests at Pretoria High School for Girls 

In late August of 2016, Black students attending Pretoria High in South Africa marched in protest of the school’s racial inequity. The protests would come after weeks of building tension. Since integrating in the 90s, some students were pulled out of class and told that they needed to fix their “untidy” hair. Other students were reprimanded for projects they completed on Black activism. Students have even stated that they were told not to speak African languages in school. An online petition against the school’s racist policies was also started, garnering over 25,000 signatures. After the protests and petition, the head of Gauteng province’s education department visited the previously white-only institution and formally dropped policies banning natural hairstyles, but not without starting a global conversation.
