Mongolia in central Asia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. It is also the world's second-largest landlocked country, bordered by Russia and China. Approximately 30% of the population are nomadic or semi-nomadic. Majority of its population are Buddhists.
This stamp features the biy dance (or biyelgee) which predominantly uses the upper half of the body, hence also termed as trunk dance. It is performed by Western Mongol groups. In Old Mongolia, it was performed individually by males and females within the tent in domestic celebrations.
The musician in the stamp is playing the traditional Mongolian musical instrument called the morin khuur. The morin khuur is identified by UNESCO as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
