State's first Bitcoin ATM opens at MV's Hacker Dojo

Is it a big gamble or a real step into our collective future? Either way, Mountain View is now home to California’s first ATM dealing with the notorious digital currency known as Bitcoin.

“Bitcoin has long been discussed as a possible currency of the future, but has been criticized for its lack of accessibility for lay people,” said Brian Rouch, Hacker Dojo’s executive director.

He said that the community space for computer programmers is “attempting to help cross this divide” by housing the machine.

The ATM now it sits in Hacker Dojo’s well-lit lobby at 599 Fairchild Dr. under a security camera, and is accessible 24/7. The machine had its debut in Mountain View on March 20 at the 500 Startups “Bitcoinference” at 444 Castro Street.

Robocoin, a Las Vegas based company specializing in the first bi-directional Bitcoin ATM, will be unveiling California’s first Bitcoin ATM at the 500 Startups’ Bitcoinference. On Thursday, March 20, the company will make buying and selling Bitcoin possible, all from a single machine. Held in Mountain View, California, the sold-out conference will by a half-day “un-conference” featuring industry leading companies throughout the Bitcoin community, as well as speakers from all aspects of cryptocurrency.

Speaking at the Bitcoinference will be Dan Held, Co-founder of ZeroBlock, Connie Gallippi, Founder of the BitGive Foundation, Dave McClure and Sean Percival of 500 Startups, among many others. The 500 Startups’ conference gives attendees the opportunity to join 100+ commerce startups, e-retailers and thought leaders in the industry.

One hundred and fifty people attended Bitcoinference, a half-day event devoted to cryptocurrencies, on Thursday (March 20th) in Mountain View, California.

The sellout event, held at the offices of incubator 500 Startups, consisted of a keynote speech, two panel sessions, a networking session and an ‘unconference’ portion – the latter melding a traditional event agenda with increased attendee social interaction.
