It has been years since it was gifted to her, the wreath of flowers that hangs upon her wall.

If she closes her eyes she can pretend she’s there again, in the blinding beauty of new spring.  And she can see the boy, her best friend, walking toward her with his hair sticking to his forehead and a smile like the sun.

His eyes say, “Can you believe it? I’ve won!” And she can believe it, because he is her best friend and he is brilliant and she might even love him.  She feels that golden swell of pride, for this boy of six-and-ten has unseated men twice his size.

And then he places a crown of yellow flowers upon her head and she would leap into his arms, were she not a princess and expected to be proper.

It feels like another life.

Now she is a mother thrice over, with two in the grave, and the flowers once bright are now dry and brown. If she’d dare to touch them, they’d crumble. So she doesn’t dare.
