ON THE EDGES OF HIS SIGHT, jarvan saw them. a fleece as white as the walls of his home, and a shadow as dark as the evening night. each bore eyes like stars, a celestial light ignited behind simplistic masks. they were the children of graves, those who shepherd the lost to the merciful arms of the veiled lady. they spoke like a whisper on the wind and then with the bite of a winter’s chill. the first question brought his thoughts to line, the second brought him to mourning. his hand moved to his wrist in reflex, finger’s ghosting the purple cloth’s hem concealed there and his lips moving in silent prayer. he hung his head for a moment, his posture faltering beneath the weight of his crown.
' i would welcome your arrow whenever it is you choose to release it, i have no desire to shame myself by choosing a coward’s fate. i would like to think my father also faced death bravely, even if he was murdered by mouse masquerading as a monster. ’ confident. unfaltering. his tone was brushed with reverence and melancholy. it was said a true demacian would always face death and embrace lamb, to live life fully and leave no regrets. though, he would be lying if his willingness to face the arrow was purely by tradition and bravado. it was not the first time jarvan had seen the kindred hunters. they had danced about his sight after the weeks of torture he spent at the hands of noxus, he saw them creeping from the shadows as he faded, alone and beyond his home’s borders. truly, there was nothing more peaceful than those lulling moments he felt whilst lying within that fallen tree, whilst dreaming of it being his grave. and, peace was something he was so starved of.
beneath his skin he burnt, fire coursing in his veins, his mind continuing to reel even with the weeks which had past. nights were spent sleepless and reprieve only came at the bottom of a drink. he could rest when he was dead, it was a promise he made to himself each day in the court and each stride into the fray. so often he spoke it with confidence, so often he proclaimed his life was nothing but a tool to exist and to end, he could not help grow to want it now. he was a weapon worn and ready to be sheathed, he was pawn played and ready to be claimed. he was tired and today was as good a day as any. ' so, forgive me for i must ask, have you come to hunt me this eve or should i eagerly await your coming another day? ’
