Tanagers make up the second largest bird family, making up 4% of the world’s birds! This gregarious and gaudy Bay-headed Tanager was photographed by Clayton Burne in Colombia, although they are widely found in much of northern South America.

Albatrosses are amongst the world’s largest flying birds with wingspans of up to 3.7 meters in length. Although not one of the larger members of its family, the Black-browed Albatross is still a pretty big bird weighing between 3 and 5kgs with a wingspan of up to 2 meters! Despite their size, they can generally be found traversing the southern oceans, but sadly, they are threatened by long-line fishing. They can be found on any of just 12 islands when they come ashore to breed, as was the case with the elegant albatross photographed here on the Falkland Islands by Rich Lindie.

With their strikingly good looks, we reckon that these fabulous black birds have good reason to fluff out their feathers and make a noise! This beautiful Scarlet-headed Blackbird can be found in southern Brazil, where this one was photographed by Rich Lindie, as well as northeastern Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and an isolated population in Bolivia. If you’re not familiar with your nightjars, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were looking at a shadow behind this bird but in fact, what you can see here, is the fantastic wing ornaments of this Standard-winged Nightjar. The male grows these extra-long primary feathers during breeding season, with the bare shaft measuring up to 17 cm, while the entire feather measures up to 40cm in length. This extraordinary bird was photographed by Rich Lindie in Ghana, although it ranges from Senegal, east to Ethiopia.

Split into two species – namely Northern and Southern – the funky rockhopper penguins have earned their name from their love of hopping over rocks to get about! These delightful penguins are among the world’s smallest penguins, standing at just 50cm in height. Although they tend to stick to shallower water, they are still capable of diving up to 100m to go fishing.  This Southern Rockhopper Penguin can be found off the coast of Argentina, Chile and the Falkland Islands where this quirky penguin was photographed by Rich Lindie.
