it's with a chorus of polite nods and greetings of miss gordon that the officers arrive. they're quick to take statements and assure her the thief will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. we've been after this one for a while. but there's something in his eye as he's dragged away, panic etched into his features, that makes her doubt. that makes the smile slowly slip from her lips. sure, crime is crime. whatever he's done he should do the time for, but she wonders if, perhaps, there's something else going on. ❝ that was strange, right? i feel like there's more to this story. ❞

the embrace is met with tensed shoulders, an automatic reaction against any perceived attack, but which was curated from a life of normalized violence, unused to affection as anything but a weapon. selina releases a breath as subtly as she can, and smooths out the shock that might have been visible on her face. she was a master of deception, acting, and façades, yet finds her skills falling short in the face of this tender affection.
her smile is small but content, tinged with her surprise as her arms wrap around the young girl. she allows herself this moment of reprieve, a break from pretending to be the big bad cat, and bask in the brief sense of normalcy. it’s as close to a feeling of home as selina’s had in a long time.
