I read Tevinter Nights so you donāt have to [potential ramifications for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf]
So, I just finished Tevinter Nights which is part of the Dragon Age novel series but unlike the predecessors, itās a compilation of short stories that take place after Inquisition. This will include some heavy spoilers so if youāre interested in reading the stories yourself, Iād advise against continuing forward. Also, this is just my immediate thoughts afterwards and wonāt be an in-depth explanation, but I will gloss over some points established in the short stories that I think might be important to Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.Ā Ā SPOILERS AHEAD
...
Status of the Inquisition:Ā At the start of Trespasser, the player is offered a choice if theyād disband the Inquisition or keep it together. Bioware tends to incorporate their own canon into their novel series so take this with a grain of salt, as it seems that the Bioware canon is that the Inquisition is disbanded. However, either way (whether you keep the Inquisition together or not), it is implied that Inquisitionās legacy has suffered upon Solasā reveal as the Dread Wolf. One of the short stories states that itās not a call for disbanding that ended the Inquisition, but a revelation that happened beyond an eluvian. Several characters throughout the stories also call the Inquisition directly into question, berating the organization for not knowing they were harboring anĀ āelven god.āĀ
Agents of the Inquisition: Whether or not the Inquisition is banded or disbanded, or potentially disgraced, there still seems to be many active Inquisition members, both outside and inside the Inquisitionās inner circle. Cassandra Pentaghast personally commissions an Inquisition investigation in one of the stories, and Varric, numerous times. Therefore, whether or not the Inquisition is in power, it is obvious it still has power and influence throughout Thedas.Ā
Varric Tethras: Speaking of which, itās important to note our favorite Viscount of Kirkwall has been busy. In one of the stories, he personally hires a few scholas (including Brother Genitivi, who wrote practically every codex you find in Inquisition) to seek out an elven chamber underneath the Silent Planes in Tevinter. A lot comes from this but whatās important for you to know without this being buggered down by too many details is that Varric is actively investigating Solasā agenda, which might play more into his role in DA: Dreadwolf.Ā
The Antaam: Itās very clear by Tevinter Nights that the Qunari will be incredibly important in DA: Dreadwolf. The Antaam, or the military branch of the Qun, seem to have either gone independent or split from the other branches and are acting on their own terms (or under Rasaan terms, a Qunari you may know being behind a lot of the actions in DA2 with Isabela and the comics). The Antaam have begun to go on the offensive, further pushing back against the Tevinter Imperium and seeking to occupy more of Northern and Southern Thedas. They also seek elven knowledge, Rasaan herself (who appears to be in command of the Antaam) seeming to want to uncover Solasā true name to better understand him (and perhaps better deal with him - the wholeĀ āif you make a god bleed, theyāre not a god anymore.ā If they can learn his name, then they know heās something that can be destroyed). As she states that, FenāHarel is a name given to him by his enemies, Dread Wolf isnāt an exact translation, and Solas is the name he gave himself, leaving his true name a mystery.Ā
The Antivan Crows: In response, several stories also deal with the infamous Antivan assassins. What can be best said of them at the moment is that they fear the Antaamās recent aggressions. The Antivan Crows act as assassins, but they also act as defense of Antiva, and seeing as 200 years ago, Antiva was once occupied by the Qunari, the crows are readily watching the Antaamās movements. A deal made by one of their own Talons lead to the murder of a majority of their Talons (the Crow hierarchy), who made a deal with the Antaam that if they spared this Talonās house, they would allow the Antaam to invade Antiva. This Talon was exposed as a double agent and killed by the others and thusly, the Antivan Crows are very pissed off at the Antaam (and also incredibly vulnerable with several of their houses leaderless - and thus it ends with the Talons summoning new Talons - me, sending out good vibes that weāll get Zevran back as one).Ā
Nature of Solas: It seems implied that the Dread Wolf secret is out and somewhat common knowledge. Throughout the stories, itās obvious that there are many elves who have flocked to Solasā banner, so much so they have garnered the title of being aĀ āFenāHarel cult.ā However, it seems that not every elf is interested in what the Dread Wolf has planned. One elf in particular comments that they were attempted to be recruited, but they rejected the notion, as also serving FenāHarel meant death before capture and they personally thought it all madness. Many characters who know of FenāHarel argue over his nature in the stories: is he a god? A demon? Just a very powerful mage? Something different?Ā
Status of Solas: Direct actions taken by Solas in the novel itself mostly deal with Rivain and his attempt to use one of his agents to destroy a Qunari port.Ā This Qunari port has remained neutral and by attacking it, Solas would be provoking direct aggression against the Qunari. He had intentions of making it look to be an assault by Tevinter forces and thus the Ben-Hassrath would have to involve themselves and all-out war would have been broken loose. Fortunately, as will be better described in the next note, this is able to be avoided.Ā However, by the end of Tevinter Nights, itās revealed that Solas is in possession of the red lyrium idol that wasnāt actually destroyed but still housed within Knight-Commander Meredith in Kirkwall. It is strongly implied he needs this idol to complete his ritual to tear down the veil, and descriptions focusing on the figure cradling another seem to suggest it does have something to do with Mythal.Ā
The Ben-Hassareth: Do you remember Gatt? Well, Gattās back and he is involved in the whole debacle of Solas nearly destroying a Rivain port. Fortunately, a Tevinter Altus-gone-thief was able to stop the FenāHarel agent from acting out her plan to detonate a relic that would completely obliterate the port and make it look as if Tevinter was the aggressor. Gatt and the Altus agree that the Dread Wolfās agenda mustāve been an attempt to force the Ben-Hassrath from their neutrality, as it is suggested that the Ben-Hassrath do not recognize the Antaamās recent actions and showcase that the Qunari under the Qun are no longer acting completely as one. Thedas is honestly a mess right now.
The Tevinter Imperium: We know itās no secret that Tevinter will be much of the playing field for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. So, whatās been going on? Dorian is in the Magisterium, the first Magister to enlist servants and not slaves, and he and Magister Maevaris Tilani are one of the few trying to actively push for change in the Imperium (we love to see it). War against the Qunari does not seem to be going well for Tevinter. Theyāve lost several strongholds and cities to the Qunari and war in the Northern territories has left many victims. Yet, the Imperium continues to feign normalcy.Ā
The Venatori: Inquisition was certainly only a beginning for them. Though now masterless, the Venatori are still thriving in Tevinter society. Some Magisters are known to be Venatori agents, and the Venatori themselves attempted to active a ritual that Corypheus had in store for Minrathous, had the city refused his godhood. Such seems to include waking up something very ancient and very old underneath Minrathous that has been imprisoned and needed Venatori amulets to wake it up and cause great destruction to the city. Fortunately, the Venatori are stopped, by Tevinter Templars none the less, and the ritual - for now - is paused. What could be underneath Minrathous? It isnāt said, though it is said that a ādemonā is an inappropriate word. My personal running theory is that it might be the archdemon Razikale, but if you want my conspiracy theory on that, just let me know. Either way, the Venatori still have their fangs deep in the Imperium, despiteĀ āpublicā rejection of the cult.Ā
The State of Nevarra: Several short stories focused on the Mortalitasi, and with theĀ ānecromancyā class having been explored in Dragon Age: Inquisition, I think thereās more importance to the death mages that have yet to be seen. However, for the most part, it should be noted that Nevarra might be on the brink of a civil war. With their king in very poor health and with half the country seeming to have claims to the throne, I can imagine a veryĀ āgame of thronesā style predicament rising within the nation if the king comes to pass and everyone wants the throne for themselves. Perhaps an element of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will be helping decide whoāll sit on the Nevarran throne.Ā
Masters of Fortune: Several times, there has been characters belonging to what they callĀ āMasters of Fortune,ā that appear to be like Rivani treasure hunters. I make note of them because I think they might be a faction or a party we will see more of in Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, or perhaps one of our party companions will be a Master of Fortune themselves, as there is concept art of a very pirate-esque character with a lot of gold rising out of the sea as a ship burns behind them and fit very much the descriptors of the Masters of Fortune in the books.Ā
UnmaskĀ āThose Across the Sea:ā Do you remember this war table operation? Perhaps give it another look. Briefly, there is a character identified as an Executor who has come to Thedas to investigate this Dread Wolf. It seems much like with the Rift, Solas has also brought curiosity to these mysterious figures. Will we perhaps be getting to know more about them come the next game? Interesting enough, Solas directly states in Tevinter Nights not to trust them.Ā
What is the Dread Wolf: Perhaps one of the most interesting short stories in Tevinter Nights is one calledĀ āCall Back.ā In it, Skyhold is mostly abandoned (as again, perhaps Biowareās canon is the Inquisition being disbanded, or disgrace has forced the organization elsewhere). In it, Sutherland and his party return to answer why the few who remained at the stronghold have gone quiet. Shenanigans ensue, and it seems to be due to a demon hunting them down. The demon? A terrible monstrosity in the form of both dragon and wolf that resides in the paintings done by the elven apostate in the rotunda, that declares itselfĀ āthe regret of a god.ā Regret hunts down Sutherland and his party, but through Sutherlandās faith in the Inquisition, heās able to drive the Dreaded Wolf back into the mural, where it retreats into the fade and seems toĀ āhuntā for the one whoās regret had summoned it. Personal note: In some murals leaked by Bioware, we do see a depiction of what we think is the Dread Wolf with red eyes and almost somewhat reptilian features that I think is actually this demon namedĀ āregret.ā As it is different enough from the depictions of the other Dread Wolf with more normal wolfish features and green eyes.Ā
The Grey Wardens: The Wardens still seem to be active and doing their duties across Thedas. Not much to really mention on them, though I doubt Inquisitionās option to exile them was the last weāll see of our beloved Order. With two Blights to go, Iām hoping weāll see them again. For the meantime, I imagine theyāre still trying to regroup and regather their strength from the humiliation that was Corypheus.Ā
The Elven Pantheon: There is a rather disturbing short story that involves Grey Wardens uncovering an elven ritual chamber in the heart of a mountain. It lies past Dwarven ruins and upon the murals, what first seems to be sick elves being transported by halla driven aravels to a place of perhaps quarantine, are instead, revealed to be elven slaves cowering as their masters force sickness into them and the hallas are mutated into monstrous creatures with many horns. Within the mountain, there seems to be a lake of lyrium, and from the lake, creatures of Frankenstein proportions are created, horrific hyprids of each other. The Wardens are forced to destroy the chamber, but the murals hinted that there are eleven other mountains hosting such horrors. What does this have to due with the Elven Pantheon? Given the murals depict an uglier truth of the age of the Arlathan, Solasā words can be taken with some truth, that perhaps these werenāt gods to be worshiped. I canāt help but think with this humane-centipede story, the story of the goddess Ghilanānain, who was said to have created creatures for both land, sea, and air. With the fate of them and the Forgotten Ones being imprisoned still beyond the veil that might soon come down, perhaps weāll have better wished, those elven gods stayed locked up in their prisons.Ā
...
For now, that is my initial thoughts on concluding Tevinter Nights and how I think the start of Thedas might be in the beginning of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. Of course, this is mostly vague and doesnāt include complete synopsis and direct texts that made me come to my conclusions, and trust me, thereās so much more I can say. If you want more, or have your own thoughts if youāve read the text, or think I have misunderstood something, please, comment below.
However, I suggest reading Tevinter Nights for yourself as I think what has been revealed within those short stories is really going to set the stage for Dreadwolf.
For now, my concluding thoughts is that: The Qunari and Tevinter war will be at the forefront, with Solas using the chaos to his advantage, but obviously, thereās so much more thatās going on beneath the surface, I donāt think any truth we will be initially presented with will be one we should trust. - Ardie.

With no time to waste, we have a tremendous news update on Dragon Age 4ās current iteration known as āMorrisonā, as many development secrets were revealed in BioWareās brand-new hardcover book of āStories and Secrets from 25 Years of Game Development.ā
A lot of the questions that weāve all been asking over the past few years, finally have an answer, all thanks to this book. I will be delving into all of the Dragon Age 4-related content in this book; however, I wholeheartedly advise you pick up the book for yourself because it is filled to the brim with insights, information and behind-the-scenes reveals on every BioWare game to this date. Ā
Itās full of so many captivating, inspiring and amazing stories that showcase BioWareās incredible journey over the past 25 years. Ā
In any regard, weāve got a lot to get into, so leaving no stone unturned, weāve got some updates regarding Dragon Age: Morrison, the current-rebooted project code name of the next Dragon Age game.
Morrison:
Along with this amazing retro-styled font of Morrisonās code name - that Iām totally going to use in future videos and thumbnails - we actually have a small plot synopsis on this working title. Ā
It reads as followed: āTevinter Bound ā a sneak peek at the follow-up to Inquisition.ā Ā
āAs BioWare entered its twenty-fifth year, the Dragon Age team was hard at work on Morrison, the code name of the long-awaited follow-up to Dragon Age: Inquisition. The game, helmed by executive producer Mark Darrah, will take players to Tevinter as events of Inquisition and Trespasser threaten to forever change Thedas.ā
Weāre going to Tevinter! Of course, we already knew that based on Trespasserās ending, Tevinter Nights, and the developers already hinting that, but it is still very nice to see hear that in a plot outline. Ā
In addition, the most interesting factor about this synopsis, is that for the first time BioWare have confirmed that āMorrisonā is indeed the code name for the current Dragon Age project, which outrightly confirms that Jason Scheirerās Kotaku article on āThe Past & Present of Dragon Age 4ā carries merit and truth to it, meaning that we can indeed trust the entire contents of Jasonās article. Ā
Regardless, sticking with the 80ās retro theme, BioWare staff have themed shirts for the project, and they look absolutely amazing. Please, BioWare Gear Store release these one day, if at all possible, these designs are so good! Ā
The book then goes on to show very familiar concept art that was showcased within the Gamescom behind-the-scenes trailer, however, this time, we have actual descriptions on each of the art pieces, and what theyāre portraying. So, we donāt need to spend another 40 minutes speculating about what the pieces could show. Ā
The underwater shot which we assumed to be Isabela accompanied by what looks like Dorian with a sword, an undead and a female dwarf, appears to showcase the Lords of Fortune, a newly-introduced faction within Tevinter Nights.Ā
The synopsis says:Ā Ā
āWhere thereās treasure, thereās adventurers braving death to get it. The Lords of Fortune are always on the hunt for treasure-wherever it may be.ā
The next shot, which I speculated it as Tevinterās capital city Minrathous, has a synopsis that says: Ā
āThe glittering hubs of Thedas are beacons of civilization and bulwarks against the night.ā
Following that, we have the mysterious Antivan Crow lady concept art with the synopsis: Ā
āThe Antivan Crows have perfected theatrical assassinations. The Antivan Crows are celebrated for their mastery of stylish slaying.ā
And then we have a most recognisable mural, one that many of us have spent way too long staring at, tinfoiling over its endless possibilities. The synopsis of The Dread Wolf Rises concept piece says: Ā
āOne of Nick Thornborrowās beautiful paintings showing an old friend with a shadowy threat!ā
Following that, we have Nevarraās undead operating on a dragon, with the synopsis saying: Ā
āFrom their Necropolis, the Mourn Watch guard Thedas from occult threatsā
And then we have ā hold on, whatās this, a new piece of concept art? Roll on the tinfoil, Iāll read the synopsis first and then we can go from there, as it states: Ā
āThe Deep Roads teem with evils both new and old, known and unknowable.ā
I wonāt spend ages delving into a single piece of concept art, but we can see the Deep Roads with plenty of light coming from the surface. Itās a beautiful shot, that Iām sure is building a mood for potential locations in the next game. Ā
The final concept art piece shown is one from the trailer, however, itās not cut-off anymore. When it once looked like an evil Cetus, it now reveals something even more wicked than a sea dragon... A figure with multiple arms, red eyes, a curved headpiece, holding a spear. Is this an ancient God? Could it be Ghilanānain? A Lovecraftian sea-hybrid-monster? Or is it just a crazy idea thrown together by a concept artist, because why not? Ā
The synopsis is the most intriguing and provides a further context for the next Dragon Age game:
āThe Evil Gods have Thedas in their sights and only heroes can stop them. The shadows of the past stir, and new heroes must rise to fight them.ā
There are many āgodsā in Dragon Age, the Old Gods, the Elven Gods, the Maker, the Titans, etc. You could certainly consider each of them to be evil too, but on a whim, with the whole āshadows of the past stir.ā Iām sure this synopsis is referring to the Elven Gods, given Solasās scheme that will return the Evanuris to Thedas once more. Ā
Taking my tinfoil hat off for a moment, this book expertly describes concept art stages relating to BioWare, and I need to touch on what exactly these pieces could mean going forward, because they most certainly could just be conceptual drawings without much context for the next game. Ā
The book quotes Dragon Age 2ās development regarding concept art, saying:
āIn the early stages of any project, before the concept artists are aware of any writing, they like to just draw what they think cool story moments could be. Itās not unusual for the team to then be inspired by those drawings and fold them into the game as the project progresses.ā
And, even further than that, Matt Rhodes, who is the Art Director of the next Dragon Age spoke a few words regarding Dragon Age: Inquisitionās conceptual art stages: Ā
āAs multiple teams worked on their corners of Inquisition, lead concept artist Matt Rhodes spent weeks creating images to help solidify and drive a vision of what the game could be.ā
āIt was partly to encourage and remind myself of what the potential of this project could be,ā Matt says. āWe all imagine the finished game. I wanted to get that on paper, to remind everyone we are making something that could be pretty cool.ā
So, while weāre all so excited to see these amazing concept designs and imagery, and we love to correlate it all to the next game, remember that these designs are very early work building a vision for the next game, theyāre just being used to represent what idealistically the developers would like the game to end up like, or what insane ideas the concept artists have for the game. Ā
Many of these ideas wonāt turn out in the final product, but itās still so nice to see this work already. Ā
Wolf Rook Book: Ā
Moving on, we can put an end to a five-year mystery, we finally have answers on that enigmatic red āWolf-Rook" book that Mark Darrah has teased for half a decade. Ā
One of my first ever videos on this channel was delving into the early pages of this book, back then I had a hunch that this book was the next Dragon Age gameās early concepts and designs, like a shiny development doc for the team. Ā
And I was on the right tracks, as followed: Ā
āThe book was an internal guide for developer and publisher eyes only that summarized the vision for Dragon Age: Inquisitionās follow-up, a project code-named Joplin. The Joplin project has since been revised to such an extent that its code name changed to Morrison, but the red book still contains plenty of ideas likely to appear in the next Dragon Age. While most pages remain highly classified, here are a few Mark said we can publish.ā
Thereās a small description of The Qunari with some other concept shots, the paragraph reads as followed:
āThe Qunari are followers of a religious text of principles known as the Qun. Though Qunari may be of any race, most are part of a race of large humanoids with horns.ā Ā
āFor ages the Qunari have proven a formidable opponent to the rest of Thedas, almost conquering the continent until a united force of every Chantry nation pushed them back into a tense stalemate. Recent events have reignited the Qunari offensive, however, and their forces are in open conflict with the Tevinter Imperium, while their spies and agents are active in every nation.ā Ā
And at the bottom we have a Creatures double-spread page with different concepts very similar to those seen in Inquisition, the paragraph reads as followed:
āAnimals, monsters and misplaced magical experiments: creatures stir apart from the conflicts and machinations flowing across the continent. Creatures range from the lowly nug up to the ultimate apex predator, the dragon. The next Dragon Age will feature our widest and most varied set of creatures to date. While often quite simple in implementation, creatures provide variety through differentiated animation and appearance.ā
So, āWolf-Rookā is still relevant, somewhat confirming that the work that went into Joplin, may cross over into Morrison, which is very exciting because Joplinās vision for a Dragon Age title sounded amazing, so to hear aspects of that work pouring into this new project is absolutely fabulous. I had a hunch that the red book was still valuable to the current project, because weāve seen a lot of āWolf-Rookā teased this year, Mark Darrah has not stopped showing off his stash of red books. So, Iām very glad itās here to stay for the current iteration.Ā Ā
Dragon Age Week:
Next up, we have an update to a story I talked about in March of this year, Mark Darrah teased a picture of his laptop with the BioWare Slack server shown at the bottom of his screen.
One of the channel-titles within the server was one by the name of āDA Weekā, and thanks to this book, we know what āDragon Age Weekā actually is:Ā Ā
āDragon Age Week is a five-day period during which members of the Dragon Age team can pursue creative projects that in some way benefit Dragon Age. The work done during DA Week, and its erstwhile cousin DA Fridays, sometimes found its way into releases.ā Ā
āThe giants in Inquisition came out of a Dragon Age Week,ā executive producer Mark Darrah says. āWe also had a board game made that we were going to put into Inquisition, but we just didnāt have time to. Itās referenced. Itās a dwarven chess.ā
So, I do wonder what kind of ideas have come out of Dragon Age Week recently that has then ended up in the next Dragon Age. Hopefully, one day weāll have a new book that tells us Dragon Age 4ās secrets and we can visit this topic. Ā
New BioWare Vision: Ā
Moving on to the final major update, thanks to this book, we have a greater understanding about the vision BioWare have going forward. According to General Manager, Casey Hudson and Dragon Age, Narrative Director, John Epler. Ā
Casey Hudson spoke on the āoldā BioWare and how their changing paths to a ānewerā BioWare: Ā
āWe canāt go back to where weāve been,ā Casey Hudson says, now the studioās general manager. āThe way that we worked, all of those stories and the crunch and eating pizza for six weeks straight and all that kind of stuff, as fun and memorable as it was at the time, those things wonāt work for where weāre going.āĀ
As BioWare grows, Casey says it must learn better ways to work while still embodying the values laid out by Drs. Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk. Ā
āIt starts with the ones that were there at the very beginning with Greg and Ray of humility and integrity,ā he says, āThose are super important.ā
Other pillars include a passion for excellence and courageous creativity. Ā
āWe used to exemplify this not because we were courageous, but because we didnāt know better. We would try things and fail and try something else until we got it right, and it was very experimental. But what can happen is, once you do know the consequences of failure, you can very easily start retreating. And at that point, it actually does take courage to put yourself out there and try something new.ā Ā
Casey says. āWeāre not super young and inexperienced anymore. We do know better, but we still have to try and do some crazy stuff anyway.ā
John Epler shared on the change going on within BioWare: Ā
āI am excited for what the future holds. I think BioWare is changing. I think weāre at a crossroads where we can either accept that and move into the new BioWare, or we can try to cling to the past. We have to be respectful of our origins without being constrained by them. Itās an exciting time and Iām really looking forward to what the next five years brings.ā
āāIām one of those people who is probably going to be here until they have to literally wheel my desiccated corpse out of the building, because I love working here and I love the people I work with and I love getting to come into work every day to have long, detailed conversations about how eluvians work.ā
All in all, Iām incredibly excited and optimistic for BioWareās future, theyāre aware of their flaws, while knowing what makes them great. They seek to humble themselves, while changing direction, they want to avoid crunch while being experimental. I think weāre going to see the company bloom when they inevitably release the next Dragon Age, and I am totally here for that. Ā
Dragon Age Day
Before I leave you, Dragon Age Day is quickly approaching, and it seems BioWare have plans this year. EA Community Manager, Jay Ingram tweeted about fans asking questions for the Dragon Age team, in prep for plans on Dragon Age Day. Iāll link the tweet down below, so you can ask as many questions as youād like! It seems that BioWare may stream on Dragon Age Day, so do watch out for that, and give them a follow on their Twitch, also linked down below:
Regardless, this is where we part ways. There was so much that this book uncovered, I highly recommended picking It up for yourself, itās truly worth it to any BioWare fan. There was also some future Mass Effect stuff, but Iām saving that for a future video that Iāll do at the start of the new year. And I most likely will do future videos on other topics revealed in this book. Ā
