A Theory
One of my favorite details of BioShock is the bioluminescence of Little Sisters when hurt earlier. Earlier this week, I recalled that it’s distinctly yellow under the skin. Now, I assumed that the yellow of their eyes was connected to the yellow in their veins— but then I realized that in game we see that same yellow glow in the Optimized Eugenics labs.
I feel that the yellow in the Little Sisters' veins are the result of the body's natural healing response to injury when mixed with the effects of ADAM. Once this was noticed by the scientists in OE, they managed to process & recreate this mixture for Big Daddies and other non-gatherer experiments. So I started thinking that the yellow liquid in the Sisters and the tanks are the same type of fluid— modified Adam made to encourage recovery, made naturally in Little Sisters and artificially created in the lab. I’d guess it was something like ADAM and hyaluronic acid, to encourage healing.
If that is the case, then that means that the little sisters eyes aren’t yellow purely because of ADAM! It would be because they’re also actively digesting human blood — which can lead to an increase/buildup of bilirubin (an orange-yellow pigment formed in the liver by the breakdown of hemoglobin) as the blood digests, tinting their eyes yellow. While an untreated human with high bilirubin levels is at risk of medical complications, the slug keeps the elevated levels at a safe and stable level, yet cannot fully cleanse the Sisters of the chemical as they consistently intake more blood.
TL;DR: I think Little Sisters glow yellow due to ADAM helping them heal (which was copied by Optimized Eugenics) while their eyes are constantly yellow due to ADAM as well as excess bilirubin.
i love explaining bioshock to people
A Headcanon On Big & Little Sisters Interacting
My idea for post-game interactions is that big & little sisters have a few staple communications they use between each other. These behaviors are clapping their hands, striking metal to make it ring (usually armor on syringes) and snapping their teeth (though this one is mostly used by Big Sisters).
Claps demand the attention of the group, metal for urgent quiet, and snapping teeth to express threat or danger. I just like it being an unexpected holdover from Rapture when they get to the surface.
Squabbling at dinner? Clap.
Needing to take shelter? Ding!
Misbehaving sisters? Snap.
My headcanon is that the metal sound was originally made by big Sisters banging the needle on their gloves into the steel of their boots— it made a noise like a tuning fork. The Little Sisters picked it up, too, making it by flicking a nail against their syringes. Now on the surface the noise can be made by flicking the flat of a kitchen knife with the same affect.
I honestly like it a lot because I feel like it lends itself to implying just how crazy Rapture was. Like, sure, they can interact normally now but snapping your teeth at someone is still an understood concept.
It’s also something that Jack and Tenenbaum NEVER considered, in terms of communication.
Like a Sister is getting rowdy, and another Sister leans over and snaps her teeth by her ear. Sister is no longer rowdy.
PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING TO THE GAYLY HELPFUL FUNDRAISER FOR THE TRANSGENDER LAW CENTER At this point in games criticism and scholarship,
At this point in games criticism and scholarship, there’s very little that hasn’t been said about Bioshock. It’s the game that launched a thousand conversations, and many academic careers into game studies, including mine. So, when the call for this year’s Gayly Helpful came through, and one of the things mentioned was queerness in horror gaming, it makes sense that this is the game that came to mind. But beyond its omnipresence in critical conversations, Bioshock is also significant because it contains one of the few instances of an explicitly queer character in mainstream AAA horror games in Sander Cohen. And while gaming writ large is slowly coming around to the idea of queer representation, horror games are still slow on the uptake, leaving us with Bioshock as one of the key examples of queerness in the genre.

Me: follows the Rapture tag for Bioshock reasons
Crazy evangelical Christians:
Me: follows the Jack Ryan tag for Bioshock reasons
Tom Clancy:
I know there’s a lot that could go wrong with the new Movie announcement, but I can’t help but feel genuinely excited. Any new Bioshock content at all just gives me flappy hands and getting a proper adaptation after all this time has me pumped. With that said, who would be your ideal cast for a Bioshock movie? Any game is fine. Personally I think they should cast the OG voice actress as Lamb, I really can’t see anyone else doing her. If we dont get Hispanic Sinclair I will throw hands
Note: These casts will be based primarily on appearance, not skillset or past filmography. I'll try to stick to living actors/actresses, but if there's a cast member I wanted to add that's passed I'll denote their name with an *.
Now let's get into it!
