The hay meadow is abundant with wildflowers, grasses and clovers. And unfortunately also many thistles.

They are allowed to grow in the other fields but I don't want them in my hay. And being chemical free the only sure fire way to eradicate them is to uproot them.

So I'm taking advantage of the soggy ground and and getting them up armed with a welding glove before they flower and seed everywhere.

I'll let them dry and then gather them for the compost so they don't waste.

Nobody teaches you this in school. Or maybe they do and you forget it because it didn't feel real yet.

Healthy soil — not the depleted, packed kind, but actually healthy soil — contains more living organisms per gram than there are people on Earth. Bacteria. Fungi. Nematodes. I think about this every time I walk across a field. What's happening beneath my feet that I can't see, can't fully comprehend.
