“A very important day is coming up.” 

She leans close--too close to be comfortable, close like a police interrogation. 

She calls Charles first at six o’clock, but she ends up getting his voicemail. So she calls again at 6 o’clock and one minute later, hoping for a result that doesn’t indicate Charles is more preoccupied by something that isn’t her.

this feels right and i’m letting it. 

It does feel right, walking home arm-in-arm with Charles. It isn’t like her, but she’s grateful for the company and she’s grateful to have been able to persuade Bingley to leave the party early. 

She’s not used to things that could be described as serene, things that don’t involve looking for exits or staring somebody down or wondering when they’re going to leave; she’s even less used to hearing somebody articulate it. 

They’re at a crosswalk, her heels--graciously purchased by you-know-who--taping against the concrete below. She’s wearing one of his jackets, too, because it fit well enough much to her amusement and his flustered embarrassment. The cold air makes Bingley’s cheeks look rosy, his eyes ever-bright and his hair some impossible combination of windswept and meticulous. She doesn’t realize she’s staring until he says something. her gaze quickly turns to the red streetlight.

“You don’t sound like yourself, Charles.” 

It’s supposed to sound clinical, but instead Spirit feels–stunned, really. It’s hard to hide, how quickly her arrogance turns into meekness.

“Shouldn’t you know the answer to that? You’re the famous one, not me.”

Spirit’s statement implicitly assumes two dubious facts: one, that Charles is somehow capable to detect at any given moment when he’s being watched by a group of people who obsess over his social media feeds; two, that the sound of footsteps behind them comes from some Bingley-related controversy. 

Charles has no such ability (that we know of), and the footsteps behind them are those of somebody Spirit short-sold hard drugs to a week ago.
