What İs Belief İn Allah?
Question: What is belief in Allah?
The first fundamental principle of ĂźmĂąn is to have belief in Allah. The expression âbillahiâ in the Ămantu conveys the meaning of having belief in Allahu taâĂąlĂąâs existence and oneness.
The Creator of everything is Allahu taâĂąlĂą. It is He who has created everything on earth and in the heavens, substances, objects, properties, events, powers, laws, and connections. There is no Creator besides Him. It is purported in the QurâĂąn al-karĂźm:
(It is Allah who has created everything.) [Sûrat-uz-Zumar, 62]
(It is Allah who has created you and what you do.) [Sûrat-us-Saffùt, 96]
(Allah, your Rabb, is the Creator of all things.) [SĂ»rat-ul-Muâmin, 62]
(Allah is the Creator of everything. He is the One.) [SĂ»rat-ur-Raâd, 16]
(He created everything.) [SĂ»rat-ul-AnâĂąm, 101]
(Creating belongs to Him.) [SĂ»rat-ul-AârĂąf, 54]
Allahu taâĂąlĂą is One. There is no ilĂąh besides Him. It is purported in the QurâĂąn al-karĂźm:
(Your Ilùh is one Ilùh. There is no ilùh except Him.) [Sûrat-ul-Baqara, 163]
(There is no ilĂąh except Allah.) [SĂ»rat-ul-Baqara, 255; SĂ»rat-u Ăl-i âImrĂąn, 2; SĂ»rat-un-NisĂąâ, 87; SĂ»rat-u TĂąhĂą, 8; SĂ»rat-ut-TaghĂąbun, 13]
(There is no ilĂąh except Him.) [SĂ»rat-u Ăl-i âImrĂąn 6, 18; SĂ»rat-ul-AnâĂąm, 102; SĂ»rat-ut-Tawba, 31; SĂ»rat-u HĂ»d, 14; SĂ»rat-ur-Raâd, 30; SĂ»rat-ul-MuâminĂ»n, 116; SĂ»rat-ul-Qasas 88; SĂ»rat-u FĂątir, 3; SĂ»rat-uz-Zumar, 6; SĂ»rat-ul-Muâmin 3, 62, 65; SĂ»rat-ul-Muzzammil, 9]
(Do not say that there are three gods. Allah is the only One IlĂąh.)[SĂ»rat-un-NisĂąâ, 171]
(He is the only One IlĂąh.) [SĂ»rat-ul-AnâĂąm, 19]
(Your Ilùh is the One Ilùh.) [Sûrat-un-Nahl, 22]
(Your Ilùh is One.) [Sûrat-us-Saffùt, 4]
(He, Allah, is One.) [Sûrat-uz-Zumar, 4]
(He, Allah, is the One.) [Sûrat-ul-Ikhlùs, 1]
(Do not take for yourselves two ilùhs. He is the only One Ilùh. Then fear Me alone.) [Sûrat-un-Nahl, 51]
(Your Ilùh certainly is Allah, besides whom there is no ilùh.)[Sûrat-u Tùhù, 98]
(O My Messenger! We revealed each prophet before you, âThere is no ilĂąh except Me. Worship Me.â) [SĂ»rat-ul-AnbiyĂąâ, 25]
Question: It is said that a person who knows Allah will be saved. Many people say Allahâs name and recite prayers. What is meant by knowing Allah?
A person is not considered to have known Allah by only uttering His name or saying prayers. For example, the People of the Book (Ahl al-KitĂąb), too, utter His name. WahhĂąbĂźs say, âAllah is in the sky (never!).â Some other people, on the other hand, believe nature to be the creator, and they say âAllahâ only when they fall into trouble. They do not believe Allah to be the sole Creator and Owner of Absolute Power. Therefore, they are not deemed to have known Allah.
Knowing Him is to believe in the six fundamental principles expressed in the Ămantu in the same way as they are communicated by our religion. Knowing is to love and obey. Those who defy and disbelieve His commandments and prohibitions are not considered to have known Him. If a disobedient personâfor instance, a person who does not perform five daily namĂązesâsays, âI know Allah,â this is mendacity.
