****    ****    ****    ****    ****    ****    ****    ****    ****    ****    **** This is the last video of the Big Sky Series.  It documents our escape from the land of the Boogeyman.  I've skipped ahead two days, so you don't yet truly understand why we needed to leave immediately.  But, this will be revealed in the next two videos, which will complete this series.  In this video, the boogeyman is a Halloween decoration, but I recognized my BIL immediately in this very ancient mythical character.

Wikipedia describes the Boogeyman as "The Bogeyman is a type of mythic creature used by adults to frighten children into good behavior. Bogeymen have no specific appearance and conceptions vary drastically by household and culture, but they are most commonly depicted as masculine or androgynous monsters that punish children for misbehavior."

Collion's Dictionary describes the Boogeyman as "A bogeyman is an imaginary evil spirit. Some parents tell their children that the bogeyman will catch them if they behave badly. A bogeyman is someone whose ideas or actions are disapproved of by some people, and who is described by them as evil or unpleasant in order to make other people afraid."

Most people today do not talk much about boogeymen. Vampries, werewolves, Batman, and the Joker get so much more of our modern attention. But, I think the boogeyman is highly under rated and we ignore such mythical forces at our own peril.

Another morning in Mt. View, but where is my MIL?

The pattern has been broken, and no one bothered to tell us. Why she was having breakfast with a lovey neighbor who looked after us too while we were there too. Heck, she made us feel more like we were at home than my own MIL and BIL did the whole time we stayed there as the situation bended from strange and cooky (like the Adams Family's house) to downright creepy and threatening (like we were living on the stage set for the filming of the prequel to Psycho... you know, the time before the mother dies and the son murders the woman in the shower).

My husband and I were having coffee alone in the big silent kitchen when we here paws galloping down the long hallway upstairs, and then down the stairs. We know it's my BIL's dog. The dog that bit the wonderful, kind neighbor across the street treating my MIL to breakfast. Also the dog that bit a renter on the property and several other people, and still my BIL lets her run loose far ahead of him.

However, we are not afraid of her. She reminds us of our own big dog we left behind in Virginia who I talk to all the time, and instinctively as I hear her reach the hardwood floors of the first story of the overly big house we are in, I call out to her: "Baby dog!"

She skids on the floor as she turns her heads and looks towards us. After a brief hesitation, she runs into the kitchen and gives us a sniff over and a tail wag. She is not threatening to us in any way, and she knows we are not afraid of her. My BIL on the other hand is losing it for he refuses to come into the kitchen with us there and instead stands at the threshold repeatedly telling her to come to him, which eventually she does.

Later, this same scenario plays itself out again two more times. The next time instead of my BIL calling his dog to him, he calls his mother to him in the same manner and tone as he calls his dog to him. She is telling us about an interesting couple she had breakfast with who are about to set out on a voyage by train all across and around the country.

The next time, my lovely BIL lets his dog into the pool area again to drink water. I am beginning to think this is the only water she gets.  I am sunning again after doing physical therapy and this time sitting up. She watches me constantly as she drinks...the whole time my BIL stands at the door telling her to come to him...but she stops to sniff and say hello to me before going to him.

My husband works and works to get his mother's affairs into order and we leave for our walk late again, so we go to Rancho San Antonio again. This time we walk further on a long trail that seems to just disappear into the sunset...thus, the title of this little video. It was such a spectacular walk!

 The silent treatment has begun in earnest by my BIL, accompanied by a glowering glare through which you can hear that he is silently growling inside like a rabid dog.  My MIL has flipped back to a more normal demeanor, but tells us in no uncertain terms when we go out to lunch with her, she is still pipping mad at my husband for denying her what she wants to do, which is a concocted fantasy set into her mind by my very jealous, very dangerous BIL.   We run her all over town doing trivial things, including finding frozen yogurt, which we find for her and go to get. She gets an important call car with us and tells this important person she cannot talk now. The game of chess, the ancient game of sibling rivalry, has begun and will only get hotter. Finally, we drop her off at home. She rushes in to return this important call; meanwhile, we rush off for our important walk and mental health restatement time. I must admit I use this time to blow off steam, usually at the beginning which since we park in neighborhoods and walk up long hills to our favorite open spaces gives me ample time to get the toxins of a toxic situation being created and perpetuated by individuals who insist on seeing only onside of reality and explode in bouts of irrational anger when reason, logic, or another point of view are presented to them. If you are in a situation where people are giving you the silent treatment and explode in bouts of irrational anger then blame you for all the things they are doing, you are most probably in a toxic relationship and need to get out of it as soon as possible if therapy, drug treatment, and other services designed to help people cope don't work. Until you can get out of such a toxic situation safely, getting outside and seeing natural and more normal and ordinary people can really help you survive fatal, toxic people who can only think about themselves.

My husband and I are back in Mt. View this day after dropping our daughter at the airport. It has been a weekend full of emotion--one that was both happy and sad, one full of joy and love as well as one full of sorrow and lost. It was a healing weekend. One of being together with family and friends who came from near and far to remember and celebrate the life of my beloved sister-in-law who lost her battle with cancer a year ago this day. 

We are already missing our own daughter too who is heading back to school. But upon arriving at my husband's family home, the masks of civility are off. On this day, my brother-in-law begins his campaign of menacing stares that are filled with growls and snarls. He hasn't started his silence campaign yet, but it is about to begin, which will ratchet up the friction and heat immensely between everyone.  

On this day, I see him turning the Wifi on and off and more to recognize his presence near us, I say, "Did the Wifi go down?" He says through his teeth, "Yes, my brother did it" as he stomps out of the room. I laugh fully believing this is one of his off colored jokes about his brother. He yaps back with no laughter in his voice, "That's not funny." It is the first time he subjected me with his meanness ever. The unstated message is loud and clear: You are not welcome here! 

The best thing my husband and I can do is stay out of the house as much as possible. And we do. On this day we walk 10 miles! 

This video records the beautiful moments of this day. Moments we needed to absorb like oxygen to make it through the ordeal we were about to endure. I felt very much like the buck we see at the beginning of our longest walk this day at Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. In the sights of potentially dangerous forces. You can see him watching us but continuing to graze and carry on with is business of being a deer unless we demonstrated clear and present danger. I decide I must conduct myself like the deer--watchful but carrying on my business of being a daughter-in-law visiting family. 

If you ever get out to Silicon Valley, Fremont Older Open Space Preserve is a 739-acre regional park that is located in Santa Clara County, California and operated by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. The preserve contains 14.7 miles of hiking trails, nearly all open to equestrians and bicycles. The area has been owned by the district since 1975. (Wikipedia) 

It is full of mountain bike riders, some wearing cow bells on their bike so you can hear them coming and get out of their way. this was especially important on the smaller foot trails going down hill for the bikes could come fast and the terrain is very steep without a lot of room to get off the trail so the biker can pass. Except for this necessity to constantly be aware of mountain bike riders, this is absolutely an enchanting place to walk, especially at sunset!

This is our second full day in Mt. View. The gloves have already come off the day before, but the happy masks are on today for our daughter who arrived late the night before. Don't be fooled by all the happy faces...everyone is just playing at being normal.

What you don't see behind the scenes and behind the happy masks is that we are really on the set of the prequel to Alfred Hitchcock's all time classic Psycho! But wait! It's not a movie...and I though Hitchcock cooked that horror flick up so cockeyed and strange, it would never happen in real life. Boy, was I in for an education.

All in all, this was a pretty good day with all the valiant acts of normalcy. And the rest of our stay could have very well gone this way; after all, we were all gathering to celebrate the life of my sister-in-law, which is a time to cherish one another, to remember our loved who was one taken far too young, and to grow family bonds.

Thank god for the Big Sky and nature to escape into when we needed it most!

Coming to Life in a Drought -- Fremont Older Preserve (9 23 21)

This is our first full day at the family house in Mt. View. My husband and I have flown in for his sister's memorial, which had to be held almost one after her death due to the global pandemic. She died much too young and it is a time full of heavy hearts and sadness. However, not for my mother-in-law or brother-in-law. 

That morning they greet both of us with scowls and growls. My husband is refusing to sign a dubious document cooked up by a dubious lawyer friend of my brother-in-law who is an ex-felon and meth user (and most probably now again dealer). They both scream and yell at my husband for hours that day. 

Our only relief is this walk at Fremont Older Preserve in the hills above the great San Francisco Valley. It is utterly mesmerizing and beautiful. The walk calms our souls and the evening in downtown Mt. View restores our faith in humanity being mostly happy, generous, peaceful people. Neither of us want to return to the family home, fortunately the nefarious family members have retired to bed by the time we return and our daughter is flying into San Francisco airport at 1:00 am!
