As the State Fair of Texas is winding down its last week and the crowds are getting ready for the Cotton Bowl, #meatorvegan set out to discover this year’s award-winning fair favorites. Although the fair is famous for its fried foods — fried Twinkies, fried Oreos and even fried butter — you’ll find a small selection of vegetarian and vegan options. It all started while taking a selfie at the iconic Big Tex. I met a professional fair goer who was quick to answer my question, “What are the most popular fair eats?” The immediate answer being the Fletcher’s corn dog. It took me only seconds to find a Fletcher’s corn dog stand and a 15-minute line of salivating mouths all waiting to get a bite of this deep-fried goodness. This must be the place I thought! After standing in line and confirming with the people around me about the corn dogs at the State Fair of Texas, I arrived at the counter and to my surprise I find a selection of corn dogs. Holy fair! I’ve already found a vegetarian option — the Fletcher’s veggie corn dog. After chowing down on the official food of the State Fair of Texas, I hit the food court next door. Inside, there are metal wind fans all around this food haven with the purpose of blowing the fog of fried grease out the building. I immediately felt like a kid on Christmas morning — too many toys and I can’t decide what one to play. So i quickly grabbed the “JCPenney catalog” of the State Fair of Texas and found several fried delicacies. I remembered reading an article the day before my trip to the fair about the Jonas Brothers loving the Big Red Chicken Bread — 2019 winner for best taste-sweet. There it was, literally staring at me in the fair booklet with little yellow sunglasses, but not in the food court.
