Bye bye Big Muddy! by kevin dooley As our Google River Viewers leave the Mississippi River and head into the Gulf of Mexico, so concludes our Big Muddy Virtual Tour using Google Street View! We’ve ventured down the Mississippi River from Bemidji, Minnesota to Buras, Louisiana, about 1500 miles (2400 km), viewing almost 400 images. I did the virtual tour myself in summer 2019 and posted to Flickr from April 2020 to April 2021. Here’s the whole tour: www.flickr.com/photos/pagedooley/albums/72157714181601536 What did I learn? Like my virtual Pan-American Trek which took my southward down the middle of the U.S., the Big Muddy Tour showed me lots of lost population due to job migration. But it also showed me the power that the Mississippi River has to alter humanity’s best laid plans. Live by the flood, leave by the flood. The river valley is already pretty minimalistic; abandonment minimizes the minimal. I learned about the majestic oaks of the south, and how New Orleans is awesome block by block by block. That Davenport, Iowa might be a cool place to visit, that there are a heck of a lot of chemical companies on the river, and that driving down the sides of the river is probably more interesting than going down the river on a boat. Thanks for all of your support along the way and thank you to the awesome Google Street View drivers and boaters who have contributed to the most important image database ever. I have the next virtual tour complete, but I won’t post for a while. I’ve visited every “Main Street” in the U.S., it’ll be fun stuff!
