BASED ON A TRUE STORY
It was in November. I remember it so clearly…as if it were only two months ago.
November…oh let’s say mid-November- well passed the depressing departure of swimming pools and jet ski fuels. Long gone were ice cream trucks and reading books under the warm sun that would softly kiss your cheek with every page you’d turn.
November… soon to be full of frosted trees. Frosted grass, frosted windows, cold and empty parks full of willows.
November.
And as we came to accept the bitter truth, like a good friend leaving… we count our blessings and hope for a new, exciting story.
One that brings joy, one that brings warmth.
November.
And those days the only thing we could do was hope.
And like our good Lord answering a desperate prayer, it came.
So quickly, so smoothly, that has one not been answering, they would have never noticed it walking into their life.
It changed the winds with these three brilliant words. ‘Unicorn Hot Chocolate.’
“Unicorn Hot Chocolate!” the Youtube personality exclaimed. “Our newest, most exciting story!”
She continued, as if no other invention compared.. “Pink Hot Chocolate with delicious Whip Cream and Sprinkles! So festive, had you not heard of it upon a first sighting, you’d think a rainbow just shit itself in a 12 oz cup!”
The visual appeal! The sugar content! The warmth!
The gayest drink to come out of an espresso machine!
‘If only..’ one might begin to wonder.. ‘ig only my lips were worthy enough for this.. this wonder!’
And that was it…life moved on.
Just like that, another winter came. Shovels took the place of rakes, windows were put in lock down and coats were put up on hangers and hooks.
Winter was here. 40 degree weather became 30 degree weather became 20 degree weather.
Mittens and hats and boots were the new norm.. and heat sources became a valuable object, producing its best attempt to recreate the suns gentle kisses.
And coffee shops became a home away from home, providing the people with drinkable ‘coats’- a liquid warm lasting anywhere from 10-40 minutes. A friendly, calming environment during these cold, torturous months.
January.
January gives this mask- often providing the false sense of a new. We have now lived so many of them that we are able to see beyond the celebrating, beyond the false advertisement.
January. How mislead I was…
It was January 24th- life continued and cold weather brought more customers into coffee chops for their liquid coats. And just as this narrator was about to order her typical Mocha sweater, her other half spoke up:
“Unicorn Hot Chocolate..” she stated, very matter of fact.
Unicorn Hot Chocolate? Unicorn Hot Chocolate?? This couldn’t be..
“What?” is all this narrator could reply in disbelief.
“Unicorn Hot Chocolate- it’s on the specials board.” She stated, again.
“Unicorn Hot Chocolate? They have it? They have… Unicorn Hot Chocolate???”
The narrator spoke, as dream turned reality upon reading a menu board for once in her
life.
Unicorn Hot Chocolate! It’s true! They do have it! They drink of Gods! The drink of love, the drink meant only for worthy lips. The drink with the bright pink color, providing only the most chocolatey of flavors.
The drink topped with whip cream so thick, the mouth can only interpret is as the highest of quality, the creamiest of the creams- so delightful, the brain feels as though it’s running in a field of lilacs surrounded by these majestic creatures.
Sprinkles, so colorful and delicious, no other drink… no other dessert… will compare.
No other can compete.. for who would be brave enough to fight a lion near its dinner time? Who would be so brave?
The drink of all drinks.
“So…” the cashier asks, “What can I get you two?”
“I will take a mocha, and her.. a butter beer!”
“That will be $9.42! Thank you for your business”
