i dont talk about it enough but im an avid reader of (and occasional contributor to) short fiction literary magazines, specifically for fantasy and science fiction, but i don't know many other people who are so i put together a list of publications I super-double-extra recommend if you're interested in reading more sci-fi/fantasy or more short fiction or just want a weird bedtime story:
Analog: hard sci-fi but the Science can be of any discipline, you can get really lucky and read some great fiction by well-informed experts in here (print & digital)
Apex: focus on dark subgenres and speculative horror. "Moody" describes most of these stories and the best of them Really suck you in and linger with you (digital)
Aurealis: Australia's premiere sci fi, fantasy and horror venue - in addition to fiction they do great nonfiction coverage of the Australian spec fic scene, including annual awards (digital)
Beneath Ceaseless Skies: their mission statement is marrying traditional heroic adventure fantasy with literary prose, which is my favourite mode of writing, personally (digital & audio)
Clarkesworld: they pay REALLY well, are accordingly super competitive, and every story they publish reads like its author fought for their life to get in. they were the ones who originally published Isabel Fall's helicopter story, which is all you need to know (digital)
The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction: its having some publication interruptions but this one's been around since the dawn of time and has published the best of the best all the while (print & digital)
PodCastle: this whole network (Escape Artists) does incredible work, publishing short fiction in podcast form with really high quality audio production, if you want to get into short fiction but prefer audiobooks as your main reading format, give them a try (digital audio)
Strange Horizons: spec fic with literary, surreal, experimental and unique prose styles, some absolute gems in there (digital)
these are just the ones i can think off the top of my head, but there's plenty more fantastic publications out there and new ones coming out every day - if you have a specific fiction itch you want to scratch lmk i can probably find you something up your alley
