The transition between But It’s Better If You Do and I Write Sins Not Tragedies was the first time I grasped the concept of an Album as a cohesive experience that should be listened to in order and not just a collection of songs you could just listen to in random order. It literally changed the way I viewed and interacted with music forever.
The BIBIYD Video
here's the tag
Shane Drake had directed the IWSNT video in December 2005 and was back in March 2006 to do the video for P!ATD's second single.
Panic finished the TS&SL tour on March 26th, spent 2 days filming the video in LA, and then left for Japan on March 29th. Shane talked to Kerrang about how exhausted the band was:
"It's funny because I think the guys were so wiped out that they were too tired to enjoy the full spectacle of what was happening all around them. Here they were, surrounded by gorgeous girls wearing nothing but lingerie and feather boas, and the guys could barely stay awake!"
The band filmed at The Derby club in LA:
Spencer explained the plot of the video to Kerrang:
Brendon added "we're really into this whole 1930s gangster thing." Ryan told MTV that “We wanted it to sort of be like 'Moulin Rouge' but set during the Great Depression.”
A fan at the Tampa show in February 2006 said that she talked to Ryan afterwards and he said that the band was watching The Great Gatsby on the bus to get ideas for their next video.
The band's waistcoats said "PATD:"
The band had found some masks in New Orleans while on tour and incorporated those into the video. There was a Hot Topic contest around June where you could win one of the masks used in filming.
Here's some of the behind-the-scenes footage:
That content was on MTV2 in June around the same time that Decaydance & FBR had free downloads of the BIBIYD song on purevolume from their summer sampler.
The music video was up on FOE & youtube around April 14th. The fan response seemed like it was all over the map... many people were seriously underwhelmed or hated the video, while others loved it (or at least the aesthetic). Some fans thought it was too similar to the IWSNT video or too "weird." SO many of us were stuck on Brendon's hair and how different he looked.
People were still complaining that the other 3 band members were barely in the video. But a lot of those threads were full of fans pointing out that the band had made that decision themselves. And I'm paraphrasing here, but Spencer had explained in an earlier Music Choice interview that he didn't care who was or wasn't onscreen as long as their video successfully portrayed its story. Brendon's character was central to the stories of the first two videos. Spencer also told Steven on SURS this year that the rest of the band didn’t want to be in the videos much because they felt that Brendon was the only one who had any acting skill. So they did what they wanted to do
This single was released in the UK on May 1st right after the band finished their UK headlining tour (but apparently it had been playing on MTV2 or something like that in the UK during the actual tour). It felt like the single was more hyped in the UK than the USA, so this was one of the times in 2006 where the band felt more like a British band to me because we hadn't even gotten a headlining tour yet and so much of the good content & hype was coming from overseas.
bonus: here's a fun fan video
this confident new persona Brendon adopted in spring 2006 was such an entertaining surprise
