Big Head Todd and the Monsters Show
I hope that my TMBG friends will not be too disappointed with this long ass post about a different band, but I am adding a tmbg related interaction that I didn’t put on facebook, if it’s any consolation. ;)
It's late and I have to work tomorrow, but you guys, I just had THE BEST NIGHT EVER! and I want to talk about it. Very long post ahead, and it's mostly for posterity, so if you aren't interested in show recaps/reviews, I will not be upset if you skip this. I promise though, I'm a fairly entertaining writer.
I went by myself to Broad Ripple to see Big Head Todd and the Monsters at the Vogue. I usually don't go to shows alone unless I'm playing, know someone who is, or know my friends will be there. Keith was worried for me, and I was a bit nervous, (for my non-local friends, it's about an hour and a half away, in a neighborhood that has some issues,) but that was stupid because it ended up being a delightful experience! I met a wonderful group of "concert friends," and I will get to that in a bit, but first,
THE BAND/MUSIC: I got there a little late, but I was able to catch a couple songs by the opening act Los Colognes (I really hope I'm spelling that right.) They were really good. They had a nice groove about them. They reminded me of The Band (the drummer sang a lot like Levon Helm used to,) mixed with some modern jam band sound. The lead singer made a hilarious joke: "If you call us Los Cajones, you're FIRED!" Then it was time for Big Head Todd. I can't explain to anyone how much I love this band. I am not a super duper over the edge fan or anything (yet,) but they are one of those bands that never ever fails to make me feel something when I hear them, and they never fail to inspire the shit right outta me. When they came on stage I got tears in my eyes. I just saw them a few months ago at the same venue, and I was just really grateful to see/hear them again. They play alternative blues rock, Every band member is a stellar musician and they've been playing together for over 30 years and it shows. They're definitely family. I love watching bands that listen and learn from each other and can anticipate one another. Todd can play the guitar like nobody's business, and sings with so much soul, one can't help but love him. He has a grin that could charm the hell right outta ya. They played songs from throughout their 32 year career and a brand new song that I'm diggin' called "For All Time." They did several covers, but my favorites were Sabbath's "War Pigs" and The Beatles "I Want You (She's So Heavy.)" I'm not a huge Sabbath fan, but I LOVE WAR PIGS and BHTM absolutely killed it! The Beatles cover was one of the sexiest things I've heard in my entire life. It was extraordinarily good. I hope they have recorded or plan on recording it because I would listen to that every damn day! After the show I hung back and Todd's guitar tech gave me a setlist! That was so exciting for me. I don't usually get to hang back at shows, so I was pretty over the moon about it. I went to say bye to some of my "concert friends" and as we were making small talk I noticed that 3/4ths of the band were out mingling so I introduced myself first to Jeremy the keyboard/lap steel/rhythm guitarist. I met his sister too. She was great! So so so sweet. Jeremy was so kind and we had a wonderful conversation about instruments. I was able to thank him for inspiring me and just making awesome music and he asked all kinds of questions about my Viper. When I told him it has 6 strings and plays in the viola and cello range he said "Wow I've never heard of that! So does that mean you have 2 low strings, C and F?" HOLY SHIT I WAS SO IMPRESSED THAT HE JUST KNEW THAT! Then we talked about adjusting to new instruments and string spacing and ya know, music nerd stuff. Then I introduced myself to the drummer Brian and bassist Rob (who introduced himself as Bob, so I think that's what he prefers,) and thanked them also. My friends, it felt SO DAMN GOOD to be able to express my appreciation to them in person. It's incredibly satisfying. I don't even mind that I didn't get to talk to Todd. It was just such a great experience.
The other enjoyable side to the show, as promised, THE CONCERT FRIENDS: So, not only was I the youngest person there, I was also one of the shortest. I'm not short, but I guess BHTM fans are taller than average. This group of classy-casual attractive 40 something men were in front of me and at first it was okay, but then a group of also classy-casual attractive 40 something women joined them and I couldn't see a damn thing. At first I was really annoyed, and they were all sauced already, but I kindly asked if we could do some rearranging so I could see. The tall guy in front of me said "Oh, am I too tall!? GET UP THERE!" and put me in front of him so I could see. That was so nice of him. A very pretty, very drunk lady in the group kissed me on the cheek when I apologized to her for bumping into her. She dubbed me her new best friend and told everyone in the group about me. It was all pretty cute. The people in the group were married couples, but I couldn't tell who was married to whom, because there was a lot of hugging, kissing, close dancing and overall love between every single one of them. They definitely had some kind of quasi-free love thing going on, and I was pretty stoked for them! Remember earlier when I said I felt extra cute today? I wasn't the only one who thought that. Those people were really nice to me and made me feel great about myself! When it came time for the encore I told them how much I wanted to hear my favorite Todd song "Circle," and of course that's what they played right then, and again, they pushed me up closer to the front after much celebrating and high fiving. After the show, Amy said "You are just so cute! You're really, really pretty!" I know she was drunk, but I thought that was a really nice thing for her to say, and I'll take that compliment, please n' thanks. She was concerned about me driving all the way back to Terre Haute because she didn't realize I'm a tea totaller. Then I made sure she had a safe way home, and she did, and I was really relieved. I caught up with the guy who kept getting me closer to the front (David,) and another nice lady (Meg,) I told them it was great meeting them and we were making small talk and Meg said "You are just cute as a button!" and David said "Yeah she's right, you are!" Holy crap they were so nice to me. And before anyone says anything, there was no agenda from any of them, they weren't trying to pick me up, they were just nice. I mentioned to them that I was a musician, and it turns out Meg's daughter is also a violinist and I told her about MWROC and we exchanged numbers so I can tell her all about it. I really hope her daughter is interested. I think it's awesome that I can spread the word of MWROC! That's when I saw the band was mingling and said "Should I go over there? I really want to, but I don't know if it's okay." Meg said "Girl! Don't ask permission, just do it!" and if that isn't a slogan to live by, I don't know what is.
One of the guys in the group looked A LOT like John Flansburgh. Slightly younger, and shorter, but seriously, I kept doing double takes. It occurs to me that I don’t know if Flans is tall. I just kind of assumed he is? Oh well... Anyway, after the show I told him I thought he looked like flans and he said “Oh that’s nice of you! I don’t know who that is though.” So I showed him a pic on my phone and he laughed and everyone around us agreed. He knew I was complimenting him and thanked me more than once.
If you've stuck around this long, thank you! Go listen to Big Head Todd! Pictures to come tomorrow!
EDIT: It occurs to me that my tumblr friends might not know about MWROC. It is a rock orchestra camp in Kansas founded by electric violinist Mark Wood. It is for intermediate through professional musicians with a world class string faculty where we learn about alternative string playing, stage presence, arranging, and overall rocking out with our string instruments. It’s a big family and one of the best things any string player could ever experience.
