Picket lines in front of B and H protesting the closing of two Brooklyn warehouses where nearly 300 workers voted to unionize in late 2015. B and H later announced plans to move these jobs out of New York. The photo/video and audio store is relocating the warehouses 75 miles away in Florence, New Jersey. #bhexposed #unionbusting #supporttheworkers (at Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan)
Police Responses to Protests
If the majority of police are actually "good guys" as so many among their ranks, supporters, and the media will have you believe, why are they so easily antagonized by protestors who just want justice for the supposedly minority racist murderers? I've thought about this before, but for some reason it was really plaguing me tonight while out for our weekly shut down in NYC. I've recently been involved with some solidarity organizing for warehouse workers who were being exploited by visibly Jewish employers. As a Jew for racial and economic justice, I can't stand aside while other Jews break American law, Jewish law, and human decency. It's embarrassing to me that we share a name, background, and religious text and they're out there being awful. It also makes me afraid for how that behavior feeds antisemitism for those who are so inclined towards such hate anyway. I don't understand why the "good cops" aren't forming solidarity groups to come out against the bad cops in their ranks. The few that have tried to step forward on their own have been harassed by other officers, fired, threatened... They are clearly alone. This can only lead me to the conclusion that actually most cops are trigger-happy racists, and even if they haven't beaten or killed anyone yet, it doesn't bother them that their brothers in arms are getting away with it every day throughout this country.
B&H Photo Video workers are continuing to push for unionization and improved work conditions in the national electronics retailer’s two Brooklyn warehouses, and although the company has intensified its attempts to quell these efforts, the campaign is gaining vast public support. On October 22, a coalition of photography and video professionals launched an open letter to B&H management, calling on the photo manufacturing giant to end the hazardous working conditions and discriminatory practices that over 200 of its warehouse workers claim they regularly face, and to negotiate a fair labor contract.
On Eve of Union Vote, Hundreds of Arts Professionals Sign Open Letter Supporting B&H Photo Workers
As photo and video professionals, artists, educators, and students, we believe that the images we create have the agency for social change. This is why it is deeply upsetting to learn that the equipment and materials used to create our work has been brought to us on the backs of other workers who are treated so unfairly on a daily basis
