It's one of the first words that Bengali learners learn.

How to pronounce the word:

/bʱalobaʃa/, [ˈbʱalobaʃaˑ], [ˈvalobaʃaˑ]

It's a compound word composed of two words ভালো (bʱalo, good) + বাসা baʃa (Inherited from Sanskrit वश्). By using the word বাসা in this context, we aren't talking about any house or something.

These phrases will illustrate what I am trying to say:

খারাপ বাসা (kharap basha), মন্দ বাসা (mondo (mɔn.d̪ɔ) basha)

It feels quite untranslatable. This meaning only exists in poems these days.

Even though the words খারাপ and মন্দ have negative connotations (because they quite literally mean "bad"), when I hear the word "বাসা" with them in this context (not "bad house"), it feels like the words' negative connotations have been softened. Like, I can expect a lovey-dovey Bengali couple to romantically say these words:

আমি তোমায় খারাপ বাসি, যাও (I don't _ you, leave) 😒😤

Tbh, it's quite hard to find the meaning of the word...

What I am actually trying to say is that the word bhalobasha isn't actually fully accurate to portray love (I don't know much about the etymology of the word "love," so I won't talk about that).
