Beyond Good and Evil 2: What We Know So Far
Last night Ubisoft presented a live stream with a panel of Beyond Good and Evil creators, including narrative director, Garielle Shrager, associate creative director, Emile Morel and senior producer, Guillaume Brunier. The fourth space monkey report took place on the fifteenth anniversary of the original Beyond Good & Evil and featured a world exclusive look at some new gameplay. Here’s everything we know so far about the long awaited sequel.
The game’s story will take place before the events of the first game in System 3, a new solar system. Fans can look forward to the return of some familiar faces, including original protagonist Jade, who appears much younger and a lot darker. The first game followed Jade’s attempt to reveal an alien conspiracy, an investigative reporter then, in Beyond Good and Evil 2 Jade’s career path as a pirate hunter is very different.
Unlike the first game, this time round you’ll be playing as your own customisable character. With a big emphasis on customisation, they’ll be a handful of species from human to animal hybrids and a wide variety of ethnic groups to choose from. The development team really want each space pirate to feel diverse and unique to each player. It’s an exciting prospect that we can’t wait to dive into.
A lot of concept art was shown off by Shrager and Morel at the beginning of the stream and the sheer scope of the world and lore of BG&E2 looks magnificent. The main city of Ganesha is breathtaking, and the fact you can literally fly out into the atmosphere looks incredible. This is a world that could possibly even rival the likes of The Witcher 3.
From the newest gameplay, combat looks fairly varied with players able to access a gun for ranged attacks, a sword for melee fights, and, a jet-pack to traverse the battlefield in the air. While all footage shown was pre-alpha, it’s looking like a lot of fun, with the traversal system in particular offering up some exciting moments.
This game has been so long-awaited for fans, having been teased since 2016 and Ubisoft Montpellier have made a huge effort to include fans in this universe. Announced back at E3 in June, was a collaboration with hitRECord that would allow fans of the game to contribute creative content (including artwork, scripts, music and voiceovers) that could be selected by the development team and then implemented into the sequel. The end of the space monkey report spotlighted some successful submissions that have all been greenlite to be featured in the final game.
From everything we know so far, it’s clear that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is a massive passion project for both creators and fans alike and it’s shaping up to be truly magnificent.
While no release date has been announced, the open-world adventure is set to release on PS4, Xbox One and PC sometime in 2020. The game’s creator Michel Ancel has previously said that a playable BETA is also in the works for late 2019.
