Rolan Headcanons part 2
Thought I would put down some more of my brainrot thoughts about our fav grumpy Tiefling.
Some of these definitely aren't original, just sort of my take on them.
Has an almost completely imperceptible interdental lisp, like to the regular ear you would not hear it. However, it sneaks out sometimes if he's sick or extremely exhausted.
Fit as hell. That man is pure definition under those robes. I think in part it's genetic, but also he does make it a point to keep himself in shape, especially once he's no longer constantly on the move after residing permanently at Ramazith's tower. Loves running and swimming (the latter I have seen in another headcanon post and its perfect).
Incredibly touch-starved. Constantly caught between freezing at touch because he doesn't know how to respond and wanting it vehemently. Over time, after being in a relationship with tav/companion, he will get more comfortable and will velcro himself to them, especially in bed.
Absolute coffee snob. Takes pride in the ritual of making good coffee. Once, when visiting the tower, Tav said they didn't mind instant and Rolan felt physically ill.
Fantastic navigational skills.
Say he's a red wine drinker because it's classy and mysterious, but would absolutely prefer a chardonnay or a pinot gris.
Was abandoned as a baby because he was a Teifling. Either from an elf/human/half-elf mother who had a child with a Tiefling and didn't know their genetics were dominant, or from the idea (that I saw in another post) that there are dormant infernal genes that beings can carry and can be randomly expressed. Either way, that was why we was abandoned.
As a result, and I think he's always kind of known this, he has an odd relationship with his body and sometimes he forgets that parts of him are infernal and it makes him incredibly self-conscious sometimes.
Is a 100% a sorcerer (I think Gale is too but thats for another post). When we meet him, he is clearly a man in his 30s at least, who has never had any formal wizard training and has made his own spells. We see in the Lorroakin fight that he has 'Rolan's' spells' that are different to the normal iterations for spellcasters. He pulls a light show at the Tielfing party and then next time you see him, he's rescued all the Tielfing children with his magic. It's clearly innate to him.
Because it's innate, he never seeks another apprenticeship after Lorroakin, partly because of the trauma and partly because he knows that he can do something others can't. There are gaps in his knowledge and actual training, yes, but in those times, I think after The Netherbrain, he's comfortable enough to reach out to Gale for assistance.
Out of all the companions, Rolan gets along with Astarion the least, and itâs because they are very similar. Beneath the surface, both of them are gentle, caring, sensitive, and deeply affectionate people, but their baseline way of moving through the world is to keep others at an emotional distance so they canât be hurt again. For Astarion, this shows up as flirting, biting comments, and theatrics. For Rolan, it manifests as arrogance, dismissiveness, and a sense of superiority. They are, in many ways, looking at the same wounds and I think they struggle to recognise the mirror in front of them.

26 Questions for Zilvâeth as a Companion
5) Would your Tav have a quest/arc like all the origin characters? If so, what kind?
Yes, Zilvâeth absolutely would have a quest/arc. It would take place gradually. The first inkling youâd get of it is if you save Mayrina and revive her husband. You could give her the wand but if theyâre in your party, theyâd say something along the lines of âA shame heâs been reduced to a zombie, an unintelligent one at that. What a waste of magic.â This opens a dialogue option to convince Mayrina to let you keep the wand in order to let Zilvâeth experiment with her husband to get him into a more intelligent state. This is a campaign long side quest but can directly tie into the story later.
Their story quest though would be in act 2 though. This is when you would learn that theyâre actually one of four siblings and one of two twins at that. Their twin is at Moonrise, having been captured while investigating the mysterious disappearance of Minthara.
If you chose to rescue Ethezt, their quest will truly begin. You can choose to not save her though with little consequence.
You can escort her back to Menzoberranzan after the shadow curse has been lifted. Once there assist them in proving Ethezt didnât abandon her mission nor did she fail it. Instead, Minthara either died or is in pursuit ďżźof a greater threat to the world. Upon doing this, you will get lodging and that night in camp, youâll wander off with them while they search through records for the location of the bodies of those who die due to sacrifice. Heist mission to recover the body and put it in stasis using notes theyâve gotten from studying Connor or through progression of regaining their power and previous study depending on if you did the side quest.
If you do this side quest and help them get Connor to a conscious state, at the end of the game, youâll have a cutscene which involves them trying to cast a ritual theyâve crafted to cure Astarion of his vampirism. Depending on whether rolls are successful, by the time of the epilogue, you may get to meet their long lost friend and companion whose death drove them to studying necromancy in the first place, Alakzar.
6) What would the player gradually learn about your Tav in that quest? Would it have relevance to a place / an event / a character / a theme in the in-game campaign?
There are many things which you can learn about Zilvâeth over the course of the campaign. If you choose to spend the night with them at the Act 1 party, depending on dialogue options, you can learn that they very rarely indulge in things such as drink due to a forty-seven year long struggle with addiction.
There are other smaller things as well. Such as the fact that they are actually a very physically affectionate person to friends and lovers alike. Hugs are more so for lovers in their mind because itâs a full body embrace whereas kisses can be given to friends due to the fact that itâs less point of contact. This would lead into opening up (depending on your reaction) later about Alakzar and the things they used to do together. How heâs been the only person to successfully shut out the voices of insecurity in their mind, constantly screaming at them that whatever they do they will never be enough. All due to the strict upbringing they had in the Underdark.
What would your Tav think of the other companions? Do they trust / distrust / like / dislike them all equally? Why / why not?
Astarion: Likely the person theyâre closest to. They first bonded over the donât ask/donât tell mentality. Along with making snarky, ideal gossiping in hypocrisy of that exact ideal. Him being a vampire (which as a necromancer they spotted immediately) is what drew them to him at first but over time, they truly do just enjoy his company. Both have very high held walls and understand just how difficult it is to navigate them.
Gale: They enjoy his company. Perhaps some walks include them musing over different magical equations. They are fiercely protective of him when it comes to Mystra.
Halsin: A bit bemused by him. Maybe partly inclined to his charm but just as easily able to sweep it aside. They may have differing opinions on whether or not things should stay dead which may or may not lead to some heated conversations. Although, neither ever raise their voice. Itâs overall, rather diplomatic.

since Alystrae's mum is now a full caster I decided to make Alystrae a weird sort of melee hybrid Wizard thanks to the Mystra's spell mod and Green-Flame Blade. I might dip a couple levels into Fighter just for some tankiness but I did manage to wipe the goblin camp without any deaths.
Xyllrae's daughter, Alystrae
(still working on looks re: outfit & hairstyle)
I want her to be in contrast to her mother in many ways. Her mother dresses practically and in armour; Alys is flamboyant and hates getting dirty. Her mother has a sensible haircut; Alys favours long hair and fancy updos. Her mother charges into battle, trusting in the will of her goddess; Alys is a reserved and careful tactician.
I'm going to give her Harlowe, my customized Rogue hireling, but I want to try to avoid using Shadowheart in her party. I don't like being without a healer but I've had good success before with Bard!Karlach and/or Paladin!Lae'zel.
Ironically Shadowheart would 100% match Alys' vibe as a romance option but I ain't going down that road. Honestly my favourite match for her would be Minthara for multiple reasons, but so far I haven't had much success with the knockout recruitment on other characters.
