ive said some of these several times but id actually like to put them all together (including non tav dnd characters) in a lil masterlist. and for good measure, i also used dividers from @uzmacchiato 💙
Badb (bahv) | Irish: crow
i found the name when looking for a name for another ranger character. i wanted a name to do with mythology and corvids which Badb is perfect for, being war goddess sometimes called Badb Catha or battle crow. i particularly like how its one consonant.
Mahtab (mah-tahb) Oulo (oo-lo) | Persian: moonlight
i wanted to make an Eilistraeen drow because i thought she sounded cool. however Mahtab became less of a devotee practically rather than someone raised in those in a community like that. its such a gorgeous name and obviously to reflect that i made her my honest character. her surname was taken randomly from a list of non-noble merchant houses in Menzoberranzan of which her mother left.
Zilvurra (zil-verr-ah) Do’iryn (doe ear in) | drow: forgotten renegade, walkers of history
like many people i used the drow naming table posted on reddit. she is named after her father’s name before he changed it on the surface. overall its just a pretty name with a cool meaning and its simple as that.
Eala (ae-la) | Irish: swan
this character’s name is pronounced differently than the actual Irish. that is because i didn’t know it when i chose it and im stuck saying ae-la rather than pronouncing the first half like the a in cat. i think the swan meaning matches up well to her white hair and graceful presence as well as her uncontrollable thirst for violence. swans are a little evil
Phryna (frin-ah) Slatechin | family phrynidae
Phryna is named for an animal kingdom family consisting of tailless whip scorpions. i have no reason other than there are a bunch of pinned bugs in my room and i liked how this one’s name sounded. for his surname i looked at generators for svirfneblin surnames (say that ten times fast) and chose some words that i liked out of them. other options were Gemcatcher or Jointmug.
Neukdae (n-euk-dae) | Korean: wolf
seriously there is nothing wolf like about her, shes a dragonborn. i just really like the way the word feels in the mouth and i think a bad bitch needs a great name.
Phrike (freaky) | Greek daemon of horror
i love this goddamn lizard. theyre a kobold range-ificer and i liked the name bc it seemed silly. she is often called freaky in general and every time someone says something like creaky or creepy i joke about how those were my siblings that died in the revolution. they also could have been named Badb before my tav or Lyssa meaning rabies.
Isra (iss-rah) | Arabic: nocturnal journey
as a devotee of the great old one Dendar, Isra has a special interest in nightmares. causing them, collecting them, inspiring them. i particularly like it because its elegant both in sound and meaning.
Yasinutha "Yasi” (yay-see) Torpor (tore-per) | Greek: hyacinth, English: lethargy
this is just a name i always loved and wanted to give it to a cool character and i just adore her. it took me a while to choose her last name because she is a dwarf and i didn’t want to just put two words together. its less about what it means and more how it sounds but i do like the bear association. bonus: as a drag king arena royal pugilist, she has an alter ego named Upton Brosia. i chose those names after two male authors i don’t despise, Upton Sinclair and Ambrose Brosia.
Casillero (cas-ee-yerro) Pingus | Spanish: locker
this is my beautiful goblin who’s number one personality trait is eating cigarette butts off the ground. i named him after the Chilean wine Casillero del Diablo and his last name is a typo? i think? i dont remember
i have too many gd characters please love them all
