Summary:Â You and Scott have been best friends ever since you were 10, meeting at summer camp. Being best friends with Scott means you know his family very well. Especially his older brother. After a failed attempt at dating Chris when you were 18, when you move to LA for a job will you and Chris grow close again? What would the world think? and most importantly what would Scott think?

You were grateful that thanks to your increased workload, you hadnât had another run in with Chris since Halloween. Even since the party Chris found his way into your thoughts more and more often. You were either reminiscing about the year you spent together or fantasied about if you were together now. You had no clue where all these thoughts were coming from, what you and Chris had wasnât a proper adult relationship, you were kids.
When you broke up it hurt initially yes, of course it would. But when you got over the initial hurt and moved on the feelings you had for him went away. Whenever you were around him since it was awkward yes, but you were still friends, good friends. There wasnât a hint of anything other than friendship.
So all these thoughts were sending you into a tailspin. Being busy gave you time to get your head straight so that your stomach wasnât in knots whenever you thought of him. To the point that you were no longer dreading going to the Evans New Yearâs Eve party.
Well you always dreaded new yearâs, specifically the new yearâs kiss especially when you were still hopelessly single. At least you werenât dreading it because of Chris.
You decided to wear a deep blue sequin off the shoulder skater dress. Keeping your hair and makeup simple but sophisticated. You knew it was going to be a long night, a reason why youâd decided not to drink too much tonight. The other reason was that you wanted to keep your head straight around Chris.
Once again you arrived fashionably late, a fact Scott took great pleasuring in reminding you.
âSo you didnât bring a hot boy to kiss at midnight?â Scott smirks making you rolls your eyes at him.
âScott you know better than anyone else, I am painfully, painfully singleâ you laugh.
Scott laughs alongside you as you walk towards the bar.
âWell donât worry you wonât be the only one without a midnight kissâ he tells you making you whip round to face him.
âWhat happened to you and Steve?â You ask shocked.
Scott laughs at you shaking his head ânot me! Iâm in a loving and committed relationship Iâll have you know! I meant Chrisâ Scott exclaims nodding behind you.
You turn to see Chris sat on the couch looking over at you as he chats with some friends. You feel the lump in your throat return alongside your stomach doing somersaults. You quickly turn back to face Scott to avoid the feeling getting worse.
âI thought he was dating that girl from Halloween, Karen?â You ask.
Scott shakes his head as he passes you a drink âoh Kristy? nah he went on like one date with her and never spoke of her again, got the feeling he did it out of courtesy more than anythingâ Scott says correcting you.
You knew youâd gotten the name wrong, you did it on purpose. You didnât want to seem like youâd remember such a small detail and seem more interested than you wanted to let on. You were curious as to why heâd gone on a date with a girl he wasnât that interested in.
You stuck by Scott for the majority of the night, avoiding any potential run ins.
âSo new year resolutions, what habit are you say youâre gonna break but never actually do?â Scott asks as the two of you grabbed some food from the kitchen.
âOh god I have no clue, I could go with the cliche eat healthier but thatâs a bit boringâ you laugh popping some food into your mouth sitting on the kitchen island.
âWhat about you?â You ask Scott nudging him with your foot.
He leans up against the island next to you looking up in thought.
âHmm I dunno, you took the obvious oneâ Scott says rubbing his chin.
âWhat you two talking about?â Chris says walking over grabbing some food from the platter beside you. You felt your breath hitch when you caught a whiff of his cologne.
âNew yearâs resolutions particularly the ones we say but never actually doâ Scott explains as Chris leans up against the side opposite you.
âOh okay, my fake never actually gonna do one is um, lose weightâ Chris says earning a slap in the stomach from Scott.
âBullshit you donât need to lose weight! Whatâs your actual one then?â Scott laughs shoving Chris for good measure.
âWhoa wait hold up, letâs hear yours first!â Chris says nodding over to you and Scott.
âAlright thatâs fair, mine is to go out of my comfort zone take more roles that Iâm nervous aboutâ Scott answers.
They both then look at you waiting to hear your answer.
âOh alright my turn, um okay let me thinkâ you say desperately trying to wrack your brain for a good one.
âUm I guess, try and find a good balance between work and life, give myself some time to find someone, hopefully the oneâ you answer fiddling with the hem of your dress nervously.
When they donât say anything you glance up and see Chris smiling warmly over at you.
âSameâ Chris says making you look over at him confused.
âI want to take more control over my life, give myself some space so I know what I want and go for itâ he elaborates not taking his eyes off of you.
You clear your throat hoping to rid yourself of the lump that had once again returned. Taking a sip of your drink when it fails to go.
You were struggling to stick to your plan of not drinking too much.
Thankfully it was nearly midnight, so everyone started gathering in the living room to watch the countdown. In the crowd youâd gotten separated from Scott. As it entered the last minute you still hadnât found him, so you gave up looking and got ready to count in the new year.
In the last 15 seconds you felt someone coming to stand by your side. Glancing up you see Chris beer bottle in hand smiling down at you.
You didnât have much time to process anything as everyone started counting down.
â10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! Happy new year!â Everyone cheered holding their drinks up in the air.
âHappy new year (Y/N)â Chris smiles.
âHappy new year Chrisâ you smile.
He knocks his beer bottle against yours.
âTo our hopefully successful resolutionsâ he says.
âTo our resolutionsâ you agree the both of you taking a sip of your drinks not taking your eyes off each other.
Chris looked like he was about to say something, but you were ambushed by Scott and all the other Evansâ all wishing you a happy new year.
âRight I feel like Iâm in the mood for karaokeâ Scott says making everyone groan.
âOh câmon its traditionâ Scott says moving to set it all up not listening to everyone protests.
The protests quickly died down when the party picked up almost everyone joining in to sing songs together.
You and Scott got up to sing summer nights together, you singing John Travoltaâs part and Scott singing Olivia Newton Johnâs part. Making everyone laugh, Chris was laughing hysterically slapping his knee and chest.
After you were done you moved to go get a refill. You grab a beer from the fridge holding the cool bottle against your skin savouring the cool feeling against your hot skin. When you re-joined the party you look for a quiet corner to avoid the heat of the party, so you could continue to cool down. You see not many people were stood by the piano in the corner, so you decided to go rest over there. While you sat you observed the rest of the party, you could see everyone enjoying themselves, people were chatting, couples dancing and kissing.
As you sat you couldnât help but think back over the events that happened tonight. You couldnât help but look for the double meaning behind all of them. When Chris told you his resolution, why did it feel like he was speaking about you? Why did he join you for the countdown? He could have just stood by himself, what was he going to say before his family interrupted. You couldnât help but wonder what this party would be like if you were in together. You started thinking back to all the different events in your life and wondered how they would be different. How different your life would have been if things between you and Chris worked out.
âHey, you gonna sing us a song?â Scott calls grabbing your attention.
âHuh?â You ask confused looking over at Scott.
âPlay us something! Câmonâ Scott says nodding over to the piano you were sat at.
âNo Scott I was just sat here thatâs allâ you say waving your hands to dismiss the idea.
âNo câmon youâre great at playing piano, and we both know you can singâ Scott says loudly.
Everyone else at the party had begun to notice your conversation and began joining in to convince you to play something.
âUrgh fine!â You complain putting your drink to the side and turning to face the piano.
You take a deep breath stealing your nerves, youâd never played in front of so many people.
You were really regretting not drinking more tonight, you could use some liquid courage right now.
Knowing it was now or never you start playing the only song that came to mind.
âIâm doing good Iâm on some new shit, saying yes instead of noâ you sang eliciting laughter and cheers from everyone.
You couldnât help but smile as you sang gaining confidence.
âI guess you never know, never know, and if you wanted me you really shoulda showed, and if you never bleed your never gonna grow but itâs alright nowâ you continue singing really getting into the song, the room falling silent around you.
âBut we were something donât you think so, roaring twenties tossing pennies in the pool and if my wishes came true, it woulda been youâ you sing glancing out into the room noticing Chris watching you leaning against the couch.
You shake your head and focus back onto the song. Focusing on the song and nothing else.
You mind did flick to Chris when you reached the bridge of the song making you pause slightly.
âI, persist and resist the temptation to ask you if one thing had been differentâ you sing pausing again as the next line caught in your throat.
âWould everything be different todayâ you finish hoping the small crack in your voice wasnât noticeable.
You hear the party erupt in cheers around you and you feel Scott shaking your shoulders in delight. You laugh slightly but as you turn to face Scott your eyes fall onto Chris. He was sat with his eyes crossed, brows furrowed in thought. When his eyes met yours, they were unreadable. His jaw clenched before standing up and moving into the kitchen. Leaving you to wonder what he was thinking.

While at first i didn't like 2 because his appearance felt forced an held up the plot,plus he was so boring and so rude.
