Beyt Dwarka is considered to be the erstwhile home of Krishna during his rule of Dwarka. Parts of the island are said to have drowned in the sea due to constant erosion. Mythology says that the drowning happened because of a curse that was bestowed on Krishna. It's said Beyt Dwarka derives its name from the term भेंट meaning gift. . . . I'll narrate the story as I heard it from my grandmother. Sudama was Krishna's classmate and best friend from Mathura. He had not met Krishna in years because...well...Krishna was a busy man; his story went from being a cowherd to a king. However, this one time Sudama's family fell on desperate times of need. That's when his wife suggested he ask for help from Krishna. Although skeptic about it, Sudama thought of giving it a try. However, he didn't know what to get Krishna as a gift; he's meeting his best friend after years together. Since he couldn't afford anything fancy, he took something that he remembered Krishna used to like - beaten rice. After some scuffle at the gates of Krishna's palace, Sudama finally gets to meet Krishna who is overjoyed on seeing him. Sudama is given a royal treatment and is humbled by his best friend's behaviour. In all the excitement, however, he forgets to ask what he came to ask for in the first place. Krishna doesn't ask him anything, but bids adieu to him in the exact same clothes and with the same belongings he had come in with. Even when Sudama remembers what he'd forgotten to ask, he doesn't go back. He is just delighted and humbled to have met the king who hasn't forgotten him. But Krishna understand what had happened. So when Sudama returns home, he finds his hut replaced by a mansion and his family living there in abundance. . . . There's a lot of nitty gritties to the story ofcourse... This is one of the versions. The inhabited island is about 3 kms off the coast at Dwarka and the only means to reach it is by ferries or boats from Okha. The waters are steely blue, dotted with the most colourful boats. . . . #beytdwarka #krishnarukmani #sudama #krishnasudama #indianmythology #dwarka #gujarat #indiantemple #traveltales #travellover #travel #instatravel #bangalanonroad (at Beyt Dwarka)
