Anthony Bourdain was without doubt a crush of mine. The qualities I loved in him was his authenticity. His honesty. He wouldn’t pretend to be someone he wasn’t. He didn’t give a shit. He walked his talk. He never hid his addictive nature. He suffered in his life struggling from heroin / cocaine abuse and never sugar coated his history. He was passionate about learning from cultures and really getting into the sensual nature of a country, city or village . The food, the smells, the mindset. He sourced and gave us the real thing because authenticity was his gift. He gave people the time of day and was willing to go into ‘their world’. I was watching his friends talk about him last night on tv. They said he was more sensitive than he made out to be. I could feel that in him too. He had compassion for others. One thing I understand is the other side of suffering.. the beauty of suffering.. is that you are able to recognize it immediately in others eyes and relate and empathize. Anthony did that so well. He could do the high life and love it and be totally at home hanging on the streets with the poor. He brought the world into American homes showing them that the world ‘out there’ is beautiful and nothing to be afraid of. His fine love of writing, poetry, film and any beautiful art form was his impetus to create. He saw beauty in everything yet perhaps, tragically not enough in himself. I thank you Anthony for being so spirited, open and real. You were the coolest of the cool. Sexy, inspiring.. I hope your ending brought you the peace you were looking for. Who knows.. maybe it was your choice to end your life at the height of your life ..
