Dialogical Self Theory, Bertau > World as process, Ingold: theories and analogies for group toning; Firing clay in reverse / melting ice
Dissertation research -
In DS Theory, the “self” is a fluid process of sending and receiving, a global feedback of selves as opposed to separate subjects and objects;
‘The dialogicalsity of the self is defined in terms of a dynamic multiplicity of I-positions which can be endowed with a voice in the landscape of the mind.
[T]he self only exists as it relates to other selves, whom exist as they relate to other selves, and so on. The “self-concept” is thus defined by the matrix of relationships in which the person is involved: the reality of the self is the reality of the relationships’ (Bertau and Gonçalvez, “meaning as Movement”. p.2)
Ingold brings us out into the landscape to breathe the weather and allow us to conceive of life as a continual process of the binding of substances. This formation is captured simply and eloquently;
[I]t is only because of their incessant pounding and grating as they are washed by the surf at high tide that pebbles have gained their rounded forms. To think of a pebble as an object is to imagine it cut it off from this formative process, as though it had been placed there, already shaped, like a piece of sculpture on a plinth. Yet as a stone, ground down from a piece that must have broken off from a solid rock, does not the pebble retain a connection to the earth as intrinsic as that of a seed to its parent body? Who is to say whether it on the earth or of it?’
(Ingold, Being Alive. p. 120-31)
Toning can be thought of as like firing clay in reverse to allow the hardened forms to combine, or the melting of ice.

Scientists in Germany have come up with a method for extracting the precious element germanium from plants.
The element is a semi-conductor and was used to develop the first transistor because it is able to transport electrical charges extremely quickly. Nowadays, silicon-germanium alloy is indispensable to modern life, crucial in making computers, smartphones and fiber-optic cables.
