Them's 3rd single was released in the UK on 5 March 1965.
Written by producer Bert Berns, "Here Comes the Night" featured 20-year-old Jimmy Page on guitar and was recorded in October 1964. Its release was delayed when the label decided to rush Lulu's version into stores instead. Lulu's version was not the hit the label had hoped for, stalling at #50 in the UK (and did not chart in the US). Them's version peaked at #2 in the UK and #24 in the US (where it stayed on the singles chart for 10 weeks).
It remains the highest-charting single for Them and lead singer Van Morisson (who was 19 when the single was released), who would leave Them in late 1966.
LECTURE 9: BIRTH OF BEATLEMANIA: The Beatles perform two of their biggest hits from the late summer and fall of ’63: “She Loves You,” which soared to #1 on the British charts, and contributed heavily to the mass frenzy that came to be known as Beatlemania; and “Twist and Shout,” a 1961 song written by Bert Berns and Phil Medley, and performed with great success by The Isley Brothers in 1962. This lovely colour footage was shot in Manchester’s ABC Cinema on November 20, 1963, as part of the band’s 1963 Autumn Tour. It has been featured in many documentaries about The Beatles.
