Guts and Casca have a child together, and they've been through so much together. I think them being together romantically is much more likely than you think. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part, but I don't think it would be unreasonable or bad storytelling for them to end up together sometime in the distant future. I love the blog, btw, and I wish there were more berserk blogs like this one :)
Hello and thanks for the ask!Thank you, I’m glad you like my blog! :D
Yeah I also think the chances for this type of ending DO EXIST. Guts is an understanding goof that matured a lot, and Casca is grateful she found new family, and also noticed how much Guts has actually changed (read: grown as person).
Like if I try to imagine a scenario where she is actually receptive of him, and he gets a chance to deal with her like a normal person - he’d treat her like a queen and she would fall for him SO HARD as a result. The best part: it’d be mutual too.
There is also this quote Guts has said to Casca during the waterfall scene: “No one lies their way into a body with this many scars” (essentially this post).Guts is basically in that exact position now FOR HER SAKE and there is potential for a romantic setup between them, if it ever comes up. Casca would be able to deeply understand the meaning of his actions to keep her safe and drag her along at all costs (namely, that she means the world to him and that he loves her).
In Episode 359 Casca even appeared to understand that he was hiding behind the tree here, so he wouldn’t trigger her (as way to show her he means well).
“You can… listen from over there”
So what is DEFINITELY still there between them is their deep understanding of each other.
BUT… PTSD is a bitch and Casca possibly subconsciously remembers how scared she was of him in volume 23 where he sexually assaulted her. They will have to dig that out first before they can proceed being together at all. And even if they do, whether Casca decides to be together with him romantically is another story too.
There is also symbolism to Guts meeting Casca in her elven dress during chapter 355. For Guts, Casca is a woman worth fighting for. She is not a mercenary leader or tool for him. When I read that chapter, it was obvious to me that he’s going to treat her right and respectfully, and this impression of mine was just confirmed with chapter 359, given how understanding he is there.
However, for Casca… Casca essentially received a “reset button” and reverted back to herself from the early Golden Age: By asking Danann to cut off her hair, she is (symbolically) ditching her feminine side and will have to rediscover what it means for her - especially as a victim of rape. She will have to rediscover herself.
Another point is that things are going to get so much worse from now on once Guts and his party leaves Elfhelm, and whether Guts and Casca will go through this and ALSO find back together doing so is a different question. The fact both may want to save their son is something that will unite them though.
At the same time, I do not think Casca will know about their son right away. From Miura’ comments in the otaquest article we can already tell Casca is likely going to be the driving force to find out the truth,
Still, I don’t wanna get too optimistic about Guts and Casca lmao. The disappointment would be strong!
Y’know, you can have good old nurturing Gutsca dynamics even on a platonic way. I mean… You can still have emotional closeness, understanding, intimacy from the “inside” and still be disconnected from the “outside” - if that makes sense? That is ESPECIALLY the case if you have been through so much with another person. I feel like that’s the tone Episode 359 is already setting. So even that I’d be happy with.
In either case, Miura is going to patch a story together that is realistic given the feelings and thoughts of the characters - and if a happy ending in regards to Guts and Casca is realistic, he’s gonna pick that.
This is a game: Try to remove the blanket under the Beast of Darkness without waking it up...if it wakes up, U dead lil fairy XD
