The good thing is: it gets better every single day as you make progress. Little by little.✨ . The hardest thing about moving from one country to another is starting from scratch. And funny enough, it happens even when you go back to your own country as a ‘repatriate’. . Moving back to Manila, I thought everything would be so easy once we arrive. I grew up here after all. But being away for six-and-a-half years means lots of changes. Especially since it’s a developing economy. From where to go to get whatever it is I need for the day (a rag, a face shield, or even a dust pan) to discovering how GrabPay works. @grab_ph was so different when we left some years ago! They deliver food and do errands for you now, too! 😱 I was amazed. Even Berlin doesn’t have such an app. 😂 Honestly, though. Doing several moves between flats and hotels both in Berlin and Manila. It’s exhausting — both physically and mentally. . As an expat or a re-pat, you want to feel settled ASAP. But sometimes, things take longer to settle down. The chaos and living in limbo takes a while and you just have to trust that process and get to your goal without snapping along the way. Even if it’s at a glacial pace — something the media practitioner in me has a hard time accepting. . Berlin, it’s been grand! Vielen vielen dank for the three and half years (and a little more) of fun, crazy moments, and stepping out of my comfort zone. ✨ . And so here we are. 💖 We are on the last week of Alvin’s first tour of duty. Six and a half years and currently on our third move. From Manila to Kuala Lumpur to Berlin and now — back to Manila for a few years before we have to do this all over again. “It’s like giving birth,” a serial expat friend said recently. “Once your body forgets the pain it brings, your sense of adventure will kick in and you’re excited to do it all over again.” . Moving is physically taxing. I don’t think I’ve ever been this exhausted. Okay, maybe it’s the same level as when I covered the 2013 elections and I was sleeping with my butt on the floor and my back on a wall and waking up in time to do a live, on-cam interview. But I was in my early 20s then so you can imagine the difference in coping and the amount of Red Bull involved.😉 . Yesterday, the moving company packed six and a half years and two countries into hundreds of boxes. It took the whole day. And to think we don’t really own a lot of things except in the clothes, books, and cosmetics department. 😉Oh, and flatware. . It’s going to be a week of wrapping things up in this city we called home for almost four years. And there’s a lot to be done. 😅My friends here joke about how I can be such a Berliner (v. direct, “let me check my calendar”, and now pretty much on time). How my restaurant/kitchen German is now on the C3 level (read: the levels only go up to C2). 😂 I took immersion seriously. Just ask @uteschirmack, the head mistress of my Berlinification. . I’ll leave a piece of my heart here just like in KL but now it’s time to reunite with the piece I left in Manila — in @jollibee. Lol. Jk. Went back to @restaurant_lubitsch a couple nights ago for their Spinatknödel (Spinach Dumpling) and it’s still as divine and creamy as the first time. The bergkäse just ties the whole thing together with an imaginary yet truly lovely bow. 10/10 will come back for it again and again. . My husband had the schnitzel and we shared a huge crème brûlée for dessert.
