In my grandparents generation, people fixed things. When the refrigerator got hot they didn’t throw it away. If the air conditioning went out, grandpa fixed it. When a third baby was born in their two bedroom home, papa-bear built another room. In the old times, you had homes and marriages that lasted 60 years because people fixed things that were broken. There was a sense of effort, patience, personal responsibility and pride in making it work. Today, most things are cheaply made. The worthlessness bleeds down into our everyday lives.
