I mean I'm sure he wouldn't be surprised that the two of them are together after catching them together trespassing on the gym but still, I think it would've been quite a shock to have that out of nowhere lmao

dsfjkasldfj poor Washington. yeah, like you mentioned, i always think that he was pretty aware of the fact that something was going on after they got caught in the gym together. and then John ends up riding in every morning with Alex after the fallout with his dad... Washington definitely knew even if they didn't tell him lol
but YEAH he definitely wasn't expecting that to happen at Nationals 😭 I think his first reaction was something along the lines of "oh my god?????" followed by concern about how USAG would react/if there would be any repercussions for causing a scene at the podium. in the aftermath, he was probably contacting a lot of officials and making sure everything was going to be alright (both for the boys' sake and the sake of his own gym and reputation). once he was sure everything was going to be okay and he didn't need to be stressed about it anymore, I think he was really just happy for them because he could see that they were good for each other 🥲
