Anonymous Calgary ‘Bench Project’ wins National Urban Design Award
A very simple but sincere project has gained national attention for its unique concept. The bench project team delivered the handmade benches in secret and placed them outside businesses around Calgary. Jill Croteau reports.
SN: this is a great illistration of how simple changes, additions or subtractions, can enhance the urban environment. These handmade benches seem built for utility and accomplish their goal of increasing human interaction without much fanfare. Absent are bench designs created in the Frank Ghery labs or emblazened with the street art of Banksy. The benches are not for show or used to pull visitors to certain areas pf town. These, refreshingly, are for sitting.
