Through the Darkness Comes a Light, Through Fear Comes Love, and Through Pain Comes Purpose: A Whole New Life For Honey Pig
Honey is one of the most docile and shy pigs I have ever met. After rescuing Honey and her friends from the Iowa floods in 2008, we decided to keep her at our New York Shelter because she seemed to be suffering from one of the worst cases of PTSD out of all the pigs we treated.
Honey lived with the younger pigs when she arrived because she was so exhausted and too docile to fight for her position with the other adult females.
Honey would scream if you touched her back and was always very afraid of people, although over the years she has calmed down and seemed quite comfortable in her small herd.
Once Nikki and her family took her in, Honey started to feel safer and happier. She was still very docile, but because she was living with the babies and two other sows who accepted her, she did not have to fight.
She kind of flew under the radar — never rocked the boat. She was definitely the lowest on the pecking order and even had to be separated for feedings because she was so easily pushed away from food.
Rose, Honey, and Freston are having a meeting while Rory checks out the photographer. Hello, Jo-Anne McArthur!
So when Honey recently returned from Cornell University’s Nemo Farm Animal Hospital after a dental — with no Nikki to keep the peace — she was immediately injured by Chuck and then the girls. It was so incredibly sad to see her so depressed as we moved her into a pen alone. And as Chuck continued to show everyone he was the new boss, the once happy barn was now cleared out and only Honey remained.
The family in a pile just last year. Portia on the left, then Nikki and Ellen, with Honey at the back and Chuck kind of on top of everyone.
So, what to do? Pigs are not easily introduced to other pigs. In the wild, pigs are made up of large family groups — mostly mothers and babies with a few intact males — and when a new pig comes in, they protect their territory.
In this photo, you can see that those eyes are not the eyes of a depressed pig and instead are hiding a happy little secret! Can you see the secret?
When you have a herd and you rescue a pig — that is, you have a new pig joining in — the herd, by their very nature, will protect their territory. This is all well and good if you can just move on and go about your business, but this is not the wild and we don’t have miles of space for them to travel.
Now, when Honey surveys her world, she is doing it with purpose — because now, she has a family that she needs to protect.
So we find other options — other pigs who need a friend with similar personalities, etc. It is not an easy task, but what happened to Honey was life-changing.
Ta-da! We are here and happy! Cameron spends so much time right beside Honey — he is the new mama’s boy! Ben David is a bit more independent, but is also very much in love with his new mother.
Because you may recall, we have two little pigs: two young boys both raised by humans who really just did not know how to act around anyone. They attempted to nurse off people, were very mouthy (they bit everyone), and had no manners — zero. What was missing? A mother. And who do we have that needed a family?
Happy surprise revealed!
And this is just what the doctor ordered — if the doctor was, say, a pig psychologist. At first, Honey seemed to not care about the boys at all, but that quickly changed. And those crazy boys? They changed too.
Now, Honey is making the nests for her own family and loving every minute of it.
You would never know that these were not her own piglets — especially when they snuggle tightly together at night. Cameron is already so bonded to his new mom that you cannot even see him when you come in the barn. No more running over and biting us — he is in heaven. He now has all he needs.
Cameron and Ben David talk to Honey and she talks to them — just like the biological mothers and piglets we have rescued in the past.
And both Ben David and Cameron greet and talk to Honey like they would with their own mothers. Piglets have their own language with their mom — they come up to their mouth and make an “eeh eeh eeh” sound; their moms respond with the happy grunt and “ah ah ah” sound we all know and love.
Honey has so much to talk about these days, and we couldn’t be happier for her new little family!
And speaking of that sound — Honey makes it all the time now! She was never one to greet the human arrivals, but she certainly does now. And she does so with the loving “ah ah ah” sound that is reserved for those you care for and appreciate. Her whole personality has changed.
Everyone feels safe now — and they don’t need to be frustrated because they have each other.
Honey is now the nest-maker for her children, the pig they go to when they are frightened or lonely, and the mother that both these boys so desperately needed — and we couldn’t be happier!
Friends are now brothers and both have a mother!
The boys enjoy some playtime with humanimal “farm mom” Susie. They are growing into such wonderful young pigs thanks to Honey’s guidance and love.
Through the Darkness Comes a Light
What seems dark at first may often be a step towards something more magical than what you’ve experienced before. Honey was a gestation sow. Her first step out of darkness was to higher ground from the floods that brought her to Farm Sanctuary. And through the darkness of the loss of her second life with her best friend came a light in the form of two beautiful sons.
This is light in the form of two little boys.
Through Fear Comes Love
Honey spent the majority of her life in fear: first, in a factory farm as a gestation sow — a fear so great it cannot even be understood completely — and then, as the lowest member of a herd. While she was happy with her group, she always had some anxiety — sadly there is always someone at the bottom who experiences stresses that those above them never have. But through all of this, she now has love — real love. A love that gestation sows rarely ever experience: the love of a child — and in this case, two!
This is the love between a mother and her new sons. Here, she shares a smooch with Cameron.
Through Pain Comes Purpose
Through the pain of the loss of her family of nearly a decade came a new purpose for her life. She has more energy, more obvious happiness, and is more content than she has ever been in her life — and it is because she has a purpose. She is someone’s mom, someone’s security, and someone’s happiness.
Honey has a purpose — she is a mother, and she is security for two very needy young pigs. She looks like she finally found the life she always dreamed of — a life with her own family.

E. Anika Ben David.

Album Review: Lande Hekt - Going To Hell
Album Review: Lande Hekt – Going To Hell
Words: Ben Forrester November 2019 saw Lande Hekt, guitarist and vocalist of Exeter formed trio Muncie Girls, step out on her own. Her debut EP ‘Gigantic Disappointment’ was the exact opposite of its title, wistfully mixing acoustically driven hooks with 80’s pop sensibilities, building on the heart on sleeve lyricisms of her bands last LP ‘Fixed Ideals’. Little did we know that at the time of…

by Ben Davis | All societies are theocratic. All of them! The only thing that distinguishes them is how the reigning ‘theos’ or ‘god’ of each society is defined. In a lecture delivered at New Saint Andrews College in Moscow, Idaho, Doug Wilson explained that the reigning theos of any society can be identified by locating that society’s highest...
