Chelsea Wolfe has spent 2020 conjuring things beyond her own haunted songcraft. Earlier this summer, she released Self-Surgery, her debut album with her new band project Mrs. Piss, a collaboration between she and drummer Jess Gowrie that stands as one of the best heavy doom and industrial rock releases that’s arguably been slept on this year. For Wolfe’s latest release, she’s linked up in tandem with other artists from the dark arts as part of a project being put out by visual artist Jesse Draxler, who has directed work in the past for the likes of Zola Jesus, Nine Inch Nails, and Alexander McQueen, and now co-operates the label Federal Prisoner alongside former Dillinger Escape Plan vocalist Greg Puciato.

It’s a full-on A/V experiment entitled Reiging Cement, set for release in early September, and will feature the likes of Uniform, Portrayal of Guilt, and TR/ST. Wolfe’s piece is a collaboration between she and Drexler as well as her kindred creative spirit Ben Chisolm called “VALERIAN”. The listen is a tangent to Wolfe’s own solo work, with it sifting away from the conventions of time and space in its framework with vapor and a quiet tension in percussion being its only outer limits. It presents her distanced echoes out of reach from reality, deep-seeded in a subconscious that is both dream sequence and nightmarish when paired with Drexler’s fragments of fire, night streets, and Wolfe’s apparition.
