How do you think the higher ups at starfleet manage vacation leave with time dilation? Here’s the grift I think: you get a very rudimentary job on a starfleet ship. Assuming you aren’t killed during your trial period you request PTO and then vacation for the rest of your life on a ship heading steadily towards a black hole. If your captain shows up to drag you back then they have no ground to stand on because 1. you haven’t even used up a quarter your leave yet, and 2. they are now also steadily approaching a black hole. Even vacationing on a planet would give you slightly more time- I bet there’s a party planet with bonkers gravity out there serving this exact purpose. There have to be plenty of people smart enough to figure this out, and it’s essentially a free money glitch. Just join a black hole commune ship and you get vacation pay for all 60 years of what’s only two weeks to you. Basically get paid upfront for everything. The only downside is that you probably can’t change your mind. It does make me wonder if redshirts being so expendable is kind of built into the model though. You vet all of the people who don’t really care about their jobs and then some by sending them into battle without like. A vest that deflects lasers or some shit. Which they could pay for easily. The problem is that starfleet spends all of their money on sparkly ace bandages and none of it is left over to make bulletproof vests for their employees who get shot at or exploded almost every day. There has to be a policy against time travel because that’s easy to uphold, but time dilation is like everywhere. It’s impossible to account for and they know this.

Propaganda Under Cut:
A better school for training young officers could not have been selected; and the midshipmen's berth of the Aspasia was as superior to those in other ships, as Captain M— was himself to the generality of his contemporary captains in the service. But I cannot pay these young men the compliment to introduce them one by one, as I did the gun-room officers. It would be an anomaly unheard of. I shall, therefore, with every respect for them, describe them just as I want them. It was one bell after eight o'clock—a bottle of ship’s rum, a black jack of putrid water, and a tin bread-basket, are on the table, which is lighted with a tallow candle, of about thirteen to the pound.
— Frederick Marryat, The King's Own
Wrt your last ask, how did sailors deal with personal hygiene? When and how did they wash, what did they use to brush their teeth, where did they go to the toilet etc
Even though the ship was cleaned daily, the men could not be said to have done so. As a rule, this often only happens on Sunday. Only the clothes were changed twice a week. With the soap with which they washed the laundry, served then also to wash themselves. As water sea water was used, which is in a bucket. Bathing was possible even if there was a tub or in the sea if one could swim. Towels were only available for the officers, who used a fine white Spanish soap to wash themselves.
Shaving was obligatory, closed beards were forbidden. Either one did it themrself or if there was a barber on board who had to do it, only bad if the razor blade was dull. The officers also used various eau de collogne and ointments. But all this only if the wallet allowed it, which is why it often happened that the officers searched through the belongings of the enemy officers onboard of a prize and appropriated their things. Then a captain could be blessed with new razors or slippers. Also the clothes were taken, because what did not fit was made to fit. Since most of the men were very good tailors, they were able to adapt their clothes.
Toothbrush and tooth powder were also only used by the officers. Which often led to horrible gum diseases and loss of teeth, apart from bad breath, among the simple sailors.
As far as the use of the toilets is concerned, I made a whole post at the beginning of the year. You can find it here… … and have fun reading it.

Sleepy
On one side, yes, the reality show below decks is an very over exaggerated depiction of yachting. On the other side, I think it's funny that if they had done a reality show on a tug or a random merchant ship is that they'll get the least amount of drama ever.
Always love hearing Sam Jones talk about music stuff! I have exactly enough music background to not be completely lost
