I am mist in the dark Shades of gray and white On the patterned rug, holding still, I am only another dappled shadow She stretches and rises from her lounge, walking towards me But her eyes are weak Made even weaker in the dark And she is going to veer, soon, to the room that was her destination Intent on her mission, I am all the more invisible But something catches her attention Although I am unmoving and wonderfully camouflaged The streetlight shows the soft perfection of my whiter fur And instead, she pads towards me An odd giant, this clawless thing Who does not swat or pounce or chase But who bends to gently caress my softest and most lovely fur Where it is most desirous of being pet Just along the chin, the cheek, grazing a whisker With those clever hands A moment Before continuing on her errand
